Meta, who controls many popular music media have updated their list of banned music types. I do lots of semi-classical, fall asleep music - often used in the backgrounds of videos and just got one rejected! Piano, slow and old sounding. Totally my work, not in any way a cover or other banned things. The list includes obvious genres, but if you were getting into writing ambient music, or other common ones - Facebook, instagram and Tik Tok are now out!
  • Production loops
  • Soundbeds
  • Sound effects
  • Remixes
  • Covers
  • Sound-alike covers
  • Karaoke tracks
  • Modern Classical Music / Classical music recordings of compositions in the public domain
  • Film scores
  • Ambient, meditation, new age, yoga, or sleep music
  • DJ sets or continuous mixes
  • Spoken word recordings
  • Comedy recordings
  • Film recordings (that are not the musical score to a film)
  • Speeches
  • Prayer recordings
  • Audiobooks
  • Generic/Common sounds
  • Non-exclusive beats
  • Content licensed from another party on a non-exclusive basis
  • Podcasts
  • Nature or wildlife recordings
  • Ambient sound recordings
  • Noise
  • Recordings or descriptions of sexual acts

Covers and sound alike covers confuse me? That means no more famous song covers? So George Michael’s don’t let the sun go down on me if released now would not be allowed? How very strange? That list is a bit crazy

What does "banned" in this context mean?

Surely, they haven't barred stand-up comedians from uploading clips of themselves doing their bits? Does this just mean these styles aren't allowed to be monetized as general background for other people's videos?

And why is TikTok in this list?

What was the form of the music you posted that was banned? I’ve posted one or two covers before but they were YouTube videos that already have a pretty thorough copyright check. I can’t see why Meta would imagine they’re at risk if Google already blessed it. After that, of course some content types I’d agree with.

Wow, they have covered just about every form of music and sound recording.

I don't really post on Facebook to any degree. I have some on Youtube. I don't use TikTok or Instagram.

I've posted cover songs on FB and I just looked and they are still there.

My stuff is mainly music for video, so i guess i cannot call it film music any more or, music based on old public domain classical stuff. So maybe real instrument or synth versions of old music? Occasional reworks of pop songs, so think a fast tune, changed to a slow one, with no vocals, just an instrument. Music that you would fall asleep to, or is used as walk on music for live shows. One was used regularly by the original artist, and we had a 50/50 split of the royalties. This is still used sometimes by a well know Brit artist as walkon music, generating a bit of money. Shazzam reports my worldwide best searched for piece of music is amazingly a pice of French music written by Debussy! Always at the top in ridiculous countries.

None of this stuff is submittable to the three systems involved here. It is not clear if they are taking down old stuff, but you cannot submit new material. Maybe its just difficult for their recognition system? So they get lots of complaints? I suppose a zillion happy birthday to you recordings would be a problem, but just recently I've had more rejections than before. Songtradr, who i use most, did not get one piece of music onto spotify and youtube? Never had that before. It was a rework of a Beatles tune. I put the same thing through another, added lennon and mccartney as writers, as usual and it seems to have worked? However, i might have accidentally mentioned i have a licence for US distribution? Her in the UK you do NOT need a licence for streaming services, but you do for download. Companies like Harry Fox are essential for US download, but not easy to get for an individual in the UK, as they have lots of US tax compliance rules, so an address in the US seems essential.

Its a minefield now. I have no idea how the big record companies get this stuff available. Its also wierd when my Alexa cannot play me my music on spotify. I can listen to it on spotify, but not via the alexa system. Somehow, my catalogue is not there. Well, actually a few are, but maybe five or six out of hundreds of tracks.

That maybe true of FaceBook - but TikTok would kill its core audience if it banned those kind of recordings

I despise anything Zuckerberg has a hand in. Facebook is so evil. I have to use instagram and he’s ruined that platform too.

@rob aylestone - it may be the volume of content you are posting that is creating problems, but heaven forbid Facebook would be actually explicit about what and why they do things. Here’s their current “policy” (term used loosely):

I’ve noticed in a group I follow (that used to have a number of folks posting covers), that [cover posting] has dried up in the past few months. Could be summer vacation, but I tried to post a cover just yesterday, and Facebook said the upload completed, but I didn’t see it. With some digging around I saw it was marked for “review.” Whether it was the group admin (I’ve posted covers there before) or Fb doing the review wasn’t clear, but I just deleted the post before it got past that point. I’ve got better ways to spend my time…

Get off Facebook now! It’s the one of the root causes for all this division.
Ha! Yeah but it's also the connection hub for family and business. If you friended me there, you will never see anything about politics. I will not allow it on my page.

I bullshit about that here! Lol!

I would friend you in the same way I would any other friend, business partner, or family. With respect and only for positive outcomes.

FB to me is not a place to fight..

It’s different things for different people, but its business model is based on putting you into an information bubble. Ihave successfully run my business without Facebook. I do use instagram however, which is just as bad.

Facebook is what turned political discourse and bipartisanship into a goddamn team sport with fighting allowed.

I can honestly say I’ve never had a Facebook account.

Eh, I don't bother with that end if it.

I agree with you though. But I just chose to delete any that make it about anything devisuve. It's hard sometimes. Lost a few close friends. But then, we're they?

This is a better forum to vent. Lmao!

Yep. All BIG social media is a problem, in my view. It's a fn cancer on our society.
