Damned if I do
Several months ago someone asked about using drum clips to record with. I was one of those who responded with, "Sure no problem." But I am here to tell you that I have seen the light and the error of my ways.

Yesterday I set up my drums and mics, but used stands instead of clips, and the difference was very obvious, especially after having used clips for a few months. Sure, it takes up a little more room, but sonically it is worth it.

So even if you have to invest in some cheap stands, get those clips off your drums!!! Save 'em for gigs.

.. causing typhoon on other side of world... or something like that...

Ahh- grasshopper! You have found the path to enlightenment. I would call that decoupling (in your case decoupling the mic from the drum). Makes a huge difference, doesn't it? Lift your drums off the floor (drum riser) or an amp off the floor and you'll hear it clear as a bell.

But wait- the rabbit hole goes much deeper - higher-quality mic stands make a difference too, if you have the ears for it.

I've been on a similar "quest for sonic nirvana" as I call it, and it's getting out of hand.

I've always wrestled with the truth that everything affects everything, but it's still very interesting to experience it in person. Even more exciting, for me at least, is to discover for yourself how true it is.

BTW- very cool that you have ability to admit you're wrong, and the maturity to correct yourself in public. So many people here let their egos get in the way of their own progress.

Keep on keepin' on.

Peace, Rez

What I meant was that some people CAN hear a difference, others CAN'T. Then there are those who CAN who really don't think it's worth the extra effort (or money, for that matter).

There are also people who CAN hear the ghost of Hitler in their head, telling them to do all sorts of dastardly deeds.

Tube-o-lator brush-on op-amp lacquer to the rescue for control of evil unwanted odd series overtones!

I've found that anointing a preamp with holy water during an exorcism rite effectively removes the unwanted overtones... easier in that you don't have to open the gear up. Harder in that it's a hassle to convince a priest to perform an exorcism on a piece of electronic gear - they've got to be really progressive.

Dang! That was Hitler? He told me he was Ghandi! I was wondering why he had a German accent. :p

Haven't looked to close at mic stand tones' but we had a Gibraltar drum frame tube that rang like a frikin tiny soft bell in the background. Wasted a good solid hour of tracking and hunting on that one.
