I have gotten complacent and forgotten the value of practice, practice, practice. I have all this music in my head but I'm not working my hands enough to be able to play what I hear.
I was trying to lay down a short lead track on a version of "Paint It Black" and everything I did just blew goats. Finally after 4 hours of do-overs I managed to get about 10 seconds of something useable that I can build on. by that time my fingers were sore as hell and guitar playing was finished for the day.
Damn.
Whenever I am under-practiced and try to improvise, a lot of bad old habits come back to haunt me. The hardest part is trying to ignore the muscle memory associated with those bad habits, and building new muscle memory with good habits by repetition.
I'm gonna have to try to pick the thing up for at least a little while every night. It's tough, though - sometimes when I'm tired and not feeling creative I just don't have the energy for playing.
I have to remind myself that one reason I bought my home recording setup was to give me a way to improve through recording and self-examination. I'm sure doing some self-examination!
OK, I'm finished whining - as you were.
