I did these a while ago to send to my old man who's a big Johnny Cash guy and unlike most of my older recordings, the mixes sound decent to me. If anyone could give some opinions, I'd appreciate it... as soon as I come up with a final mix I'm deleting all the raw tracks. I did these songs at the same time (on the same track in my mixer, in fact), so the mixes should be the same. It's not necessary to listen to both unless you enjoy hearing what JC would have sounded like with only two fingers on his left hand and after being kicked in the balls. :)

Thanks!

UPDATE:

I can't find the master recordings, which means I must have deleted them accidentally at some point, and I'm stuck with these mixes and can't make any changes. I'll have to re-record them if I want to satisfy my OCD. Thanks for your comments, guys. Mods, you can delete this thread.

I really like Understand Your Man. It's shambolic and perfect. I like the balance, the separation and the sound. More than that, I like the feel. Happily, it's an awesome song as well. Cash must have been listening to Dylan when he wrote it.

Thanks. After looking up "shambolic" (dictionary.com said it's chiefly British, so I don't feel like a total moron for not knowing it), I can't say I disagree with that part of your assessment. I never heard the original Dylan song, but I've heard Mike Ness' cover of "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright", and yeah, the bridge/chorus is pretty much identical. In fact, when I recorded this, it got me thinking about that song and I was going to do the drums for it right away, but I ran out of time.

Thanks for the listen and comment.

You're in the zone. Do more.

That particular zone was probably 5 months ago. I'm well out of that zone by this point. The zone that I'm in now would scarcely qualify even as it's own zone, by the zonal standards of most. I appreciate the encouragement, though.

Like your voice once again.
Not sure about how tight the kick was on Understand Your Man. The rhythm guitars were a bit wonky on the timing.

You've got passion.

On both tracks I sensed timing tension. Most likely it's the rhythm guitars wanting to push ahead of the beat.

I like the energy and the rambunctiousness of the tracks.

Aw Christ! You're giving me the spirit award? Isn't that what they give the kid who comes in last place at the Special Olympics?

:)

Thanks for the comments, guys. Getting the rhythm guitars in sync is something I should be able to fix relatively easy.

Geez, I thought you were *aiming* at that shambling feel.

Here's your trophy.

I never aim to be sloppy. Anything I do that sounds that way is due to lack of skill, time (particularly with drums), patience, or knowledge. I always want anything I record to sound as professional as possible, given the constraints I have. That said, I do this for fun and am far from a perfectionist about it, which, given the recordings I've made, has got to be pretty goddamned obvious. :)
