They recorded John Bonham with one mic (not a 58, probably something very nice) hanging from the ceiling, or at least on some of the Led Zep stuff. If your drummer is good and can "mix" themselves based on the playback, you eliminate any kind of phase weirdness, and with a great room, it can sound amazing.
