I REALLY Thought These Were Starions, But Now...?

Just another guy, really.
Bought a set of drums a while back, for the Rock n Roll Summer camp I'm providing backline gear for. Seller is a good, experienced drummer, and he told me they were Starions that he put Tama heads on. Only paid $75 for the set- heck, the heads are worth more than that! But the thing is, instead of having wraps, they are stained and clearcoated- you can see the real woodgrain thru the finish.

Are/were there any Starions finished like that? I am sure they have not been stripped and refinished, just not nearly old enough for that.

No badges on any of the drums. Nothing with a name. Curioser and curioser.

Any light to shine on this mystery?

I've never seen a Starion kit or any advertising that suggested they sold any kits other than wrap. I would be very surprised if they marketed any kits that were not wrapped ...... and I can't imagine wood grain would be nice enough that someone would have taken off the wrap and stained the shells.

I've been out of the retail end for a few years - but I use to work in a drum shop that had access to the Starion line ........ so I would like to think I'm relatively informed.

Not wrapped, for sure- these are varnished (probably poly) over stained wood. One spot on the kick drum, the finish got distrubed, and you can see the same wood grain, sans stain and poly.

So, what would you guess they are?

I have no idea. There are alot of companies that market drums .....often drums that are made by other compnies. Sometimes, the mounting hardware, lugs, etc. can give a general idea (certain companies used certain hardware designs, etc.)...... but in the absence of any badge or stamp - even upon close inspection ..... a guess would be all you could hope for.

Since you only paid $75 - if they sound decent ...... I guess you should just except that they are likely some Korean made instrument ......... much like the dozens of no name "Strat" style guitars floating around.
