I really need help! Please help!

HI,

I have a simple studio with a Macbook mid 2010 - 2.4GHz - 4GB, M-Audio Mobile Pre USB sound card, Behringer Xenyx 802 mixer, Rode NT2 microphone and Behringer MS20 monitors to record vocals. I just started using Pro Tools M-Powered 8 and everything are setup correctly, updated, drivers installed, signals are coming in when I am recording my vocals, it also playback well too.

However, there's like some noise feedback, with low frequency from the signal. When I enable record in a stereo/mono track, the signal will be hitting -32 on the signal indicator already without any background noises. Also these noises are not from the background, even when playing back you can hear it while the vocals are still sounding fine, just that there is that same noise there. You can see the waveform of the feedback noise even when I record without singing or making any noises, everything in complete silent.

When I take the XLR cable that connects my microphone to mixer's input 1 and plug it in my sound card, there will be no noise, just clean vocals. I can record this way, straight to the sound card but I think I can't record it in stereo, I don't know if the sound card support stereo through XLR connections, they have 2 XLR channels, Channel 1 and Channel 2 but I only receive one side of the signal when recording in a stereo track in Pro Tools. If I plug it in channel 1 the vocals would be all in the left, if i plug it in channel 2 the vocals would be all in the right. There might be a way to record in stereo through those inputs, maybe you might know. But the main problem is that every time I plug my mic in to the mixer it will create that noise. So if you think you can help or not please still let me know. I really want this studio to work, I been trying for so long.

Do you think my mixer is damaged?
Is it Pro Tools?
Mixer is too close to the monitor? (I have my mixer right in front of my monitor)

Please help me to resolve this problem so I can start working with my studio.

Stereo......

Here's the thing, you don't wanna record in stereo, always record to mono in PT unless your using midi you may come across some panning difficulties. Most major studio will split your track to mono anyway. If it's necessary you can do another track for a doubling effect or duplicate the first one you did. Also when you go to add effects like rvb, delay, use a separate stereo bus track and bus the original track to the effect track. Also, ditch the Berringer, I had one and found that if I went thru it to my box setup i was just going from pre amp to pre amp which created a horrible sound and was hard to eq and work with, just go straight into PT. Another way to get rid of that unwanted noise is to add some compression or a gate to your channel. That would help alot and only get the sounds you need not the unwanted noise of everything else. Those you can keep on the same channel I think alot of people are confused when it comes to stereo, in reality you create your own stereo by panning and capturing what stands out and what is around in your mix.

I am also having a problem with the xenyx 802. It says you can play music or anything through the other inputs but when I do I get an extreme amount of feedback even at low levels. I am not that knowledgeable about audio so any help would be appreciated. I have two mics setup through the mixer ..The mixer is then routed through to the computer. The audio from the mics is great. I can even push the volume and gains way high and get crisp loud sound. However, even with the mics off...no matter what I put into the other inputs it gives me no head room and just the slightest boost in volume on any of the inputs and I hit a wall of Feedback... thanks for any input.
 
Well after some trouble shooting I was happy to discover that it wasn't user error...I had the ipad running into the mixer and using it as a karaoke machine.(quite successfully I might add) then the mics and the karaoke music were being routed to the computer for recording.

Here is the issue. The headphone out on the ipad is grouped with the mic. so it is a 3 strip on the 1/8" left, right, mic. The mic carries a DC energy signal which interferes with the stereo signal. I also found another thread which suggested to use a DC inhibitor which would block\strip out the mic feed from the stereo and eliminate the problem. I tried several other different audio devices to replace the ipad for the music; with the same headphone out ===> mixer setup and they all were clear with no feedback so I am pretty confident this is the issue. Thankyou guys for your quick responses.

no one here would ever have gotten that. Mainly cos the ipad wasn't in the op! :p
