The reason I hate rap is not because it's roots are in the black community, or that many black people have become "famous" even though I consider them lesser musicians. It's because I appreciate music with a melody and an interesting harmonic structure. I believe rap is ruining that (note the emphasis on I BELIEVE). I also believe that rap is dumbing down music, and I guess that is what I really have issues with - that and the fact that most practitioner's seem to be only interested in the music in order to get rich/famous quickly. Look at how many people are worried about copyrighting/publishing/ their work and getting a record deal long before they have developed any meaningful skills. It'as all about the business.

Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of crap in ANY genre. But to me, rap celebrates and embraces that which I despise. There may be one or two decent works, I dunno, I haven't heard them.

There is no arguing that certain rapper's lyrics are intersting. But that's what it is - poetry. It is not music to me.

Now, this is probably the first time I have mentioned that I don't like rap on this board- and that's because I don't believe I can speak for anyone else. BUT, whenever some moron comes along and says that "if you hate a genre you're an idiot", I take umbrage. I hate the genre because of what it musicially represents. It has NOTHING to do with race.

And I will tell you that hip/hop/rap is the ONLY genre that I feel this way about.

FWIW, I also do not believe a rap can be called a song. A song is SUNG, and it has a melody.

All this is of course, my opinion, and worth every cent you paid for it.

Fair enough. This is the USA and everyone is entitled to their own opinion and i respect that. As for me, i am a rapper/musician/singer(somewhat :D ). I've been playing the piano since my age was in the single digits and along the way i've picked up saxophone, drums, and working on guitar. I,myself, like the concept of rapping but alot of these lyrics being broadcasted on the radio waves are just horrible. I believe with all of my heart that there is a huge mass of underground artists that are miles ahead of anything on the radio. I believe that is true for all genres. But, the music industry has turned into a big money pile and alot of new artists just get into for the money, which in turn equals poor quality music.

So I stand by what I said earlier, if anyone asks for the best mic under $XXX for any style of music, I'm recommending the Wollensak.

You talking about this POS?: Woolensock

I really like Rodes. I have two NT1000's and I had an NTK until recently when I sold it to help pay for another preamp. I believe that the NT-2A uses the same capsule as the NT2000, and goes for about $200 less. the main differences seem to be a smaller housing and that it doesn't have the continuously variable pattern, high pass filter and pad-- just stepped settings for each.

If you spent so much time in a studio with engineers you would know that "the best mic for rap" doesn't exist at any price. You have to try a bunch of mics and find the one that sounds best for YOU. everyones voice is different and every mic makes your voice sound different. Ask your engineer buddies to let you try a lot of different mics and pic the one that sounds best. That's how it is really done. Anyone giving you a specific model as "the best" is just guessing and going on what we've done or heard.

I've been following this thread with much amuzement from the begining. I'll state it one more time, although I'm sure it's been said previously in this very thread. There is no "best mic for rap vocals" anymore than there is a best amp for rock guitar, or best anything for anything. EVERYBODY's voice is different, and therefore may be flattered by or ill-served by any particular mic at any price level. That, right there (and the fact that it's been askede SO MUCH), is the root of the anomosity of this type of question - not racial discrimination, or hatred of a genre of music - but the fact that your question can't be answered. Now, if you were to post a sample of your voice, maybe someone could recommend a mic that would suit your voice particularly well. Maybe you did that in your early post, and I forgot or missed it - if so, my bad.

Anyway, you seem like a good guy, and I, for one hope you don't let this little pissing match getcha down. Stick around. It's a bit lit a fraternity here, with some serious hazing of newbies, but if you show some moxy, or simply ignore it, there is (between all the BS) some decent info to be gleaned, and dare I say some interesting personalities to appreciate.

So, bottom line is post a sample (if you didn't already), or go to a music store and try some different mics till you hear what you like. But otherwise just ignore these jokers who like to mix it up here. Sometimes it's just fun to irk people.

That has to be about the longest post I've ever not bothered to read.

Mic: Electrovoice RE27 Price: $450
Reason: It is like a RE20 only with more bling. You won't have to worry quite as much about your room as you would with a condensor. It is also a bit more "dummy proof" as you won't have to worry much about Popping P's and wind noises. Won't need phantom power either.
Url: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/prod...ultipurpose-Microphone?sku=270042&src=3WFRWXX
Pros: Long, strong, and blingin' with a solid sound. Matches my platinum teeth.
Cons: May not be as "crispy" as a condensor, if you are wanting that kind of sound; and there is no "best" mic for rap vocals.

You should read it. It's worth the time and effort, for sure.

If you're in a "pro" studio then ask the pro's. Why even bother with us? For example, what mic are you using in this "pro" studio? Do you like the way it sounds?

Alright, I read something about him being in NY tracking at some studio and having a few spare moments to get his laptop bla-bla-bla-bla ... and suddenly the sirens going off from my bullshit detector got so loud, I couldn't even read. My head hurts, and I think I'm going deaf, in fact, they were so loud.

I think I may have read a few more sentences before my gut started hurting so bad from laughter that I still couldn't finish reading. :D I tried, though. I really did. This guy is like a real-life Walters, in the flesh. I mean ... if Walters were actually a real dude ... he would be this guy.
