The reason I hate rap is not because it's roots are in the black community, or that many black people have become "famous" even though I consider them lesser musicians. It's because I appreciate music with a melody and an interesting harmonic structure. I believe rap is ruining that (note the emphasis on I BELIEVE). I also believe that rap is dumbing down music, and I guess that is what I really have issues with - that and the fact that most practitioner's seem to be only interested in the music in order to get rich/famous quickly. Look at how many people are worried about copyrighting/publishing/ their work and getting a record deal long before they have developed any meaningful skills. It'as all about the business.
Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of crap in ANY genre. But to me, rap celebrates and embraces that which I despise. There may be one or two decent works, I dunno, I haven't heard them.
There is no arguing that certain rapper's lyrics are intersting. But that's what it is - poetry. It is not music to me.
Now, this is probably the first time I have mentioned that I don't like rap on this board- and that's because I don't believe I can speak for anyone else. BUT, whenever some moron comes along and says that "if you hate a genre you're an idiot", I take umbrage. I hate the genre because of what it musicially represents. It has NOTHING to do with race.
And I will tell you that hip/hop/rap is the ONLY genre that I feel this way about.
FWIW, I also do not believe a rap can be called a song. A song is SUNG, and it has a melody.
All this is of course, my opinion, and worth every cent you paid for it.
