Can anyone tell me why we get a distorted, horrible sound for kick drums when using the Shure kick drum mics, but an SM-57 sounds incredibly good?

I just threw out the theory of 57's being strictly instrument/backup vocal mics.

help,
Thanks!

type of mic

It's a Shure Beta kick mic. I forgot what the model number was, but I know my drummer paid about $800 for two of em...

The Betas put out more volume than 57s, maybe it's overloading the mixer preamp, I had a similar problem the first time I used a Behringer mixer, it was a live gig and i was running the input to the kick channel trimmed to about +5 db (nowhere near clipping, I do this all the time on Mackies), the kick had a horrible weak and tubby sound, it turns out that it was the preamp crapping out, when I backed off the trim to about 0db it got a lot better.
