I need opinions on my mix

Im recording a Cd with my band and i need some feedback from anybody who has any advice to give. I'm not expecting full commercial quality with this mix because I'm not using an expensive preamp. just an alesis 3630. Mics are sm 57,
cad kick mic, mxl 990 condenser and cheap fender used for overhead on drums.

more substance to the vocal sound. It not only sounds far away but hollow ( NOT THIN THOUGH)

This is a song I would enjoy mixing. Sounds like you guys can actually play.

Listen to this song QUIETLY in mono, and please repost an mp3 when you have it in mono and quiet and are sure you can hear everything and are happy that the song itself comes across.

Dont turn it back up or switch back to stereo, until after the mp3 is sent, but DO mix it to stereo.

so just take everything that i panned out left and right, bring it to center and turn it down and repost it? alright man will do. How do I add more substance to the vocals? Thanks for the input

No, leave em panned, just monitor in mono.

Actually, panning in mono is an awesome trick as well. As counterintuitive as it seems. You get the track panned roguhly where you think it wants to be, then switch monitors to mono and SLOWLY pan the piece around that area and look for the spot where it jumps up. Then you can turn the volume back down a bit on it, find it isnt gone. Turing it back to stereo you say " wow! things sound a lot clearer now!"

Cool song. I like your sound. I listened on my laptop PC speakers so these comments might be biased I like the use of effects on the vocals, but it might be the balance is not right. The very last chorus to lead singer stood out more in the mix. In the begining, the vocals competed with everything else and I "think" this was due to the balance of dry versus effects on the vocals.

Very interesting. So this is basically a method to find the best hole, or least covered spot in the field, simply based on volume.

Same here. (P/C speakers too.) The voc (in the first part at least) seems to be pumping in and out of dialed in. The effects(?) or some compressor issues? Can't tell.

hmmm i'll take a listen and see what you guys mean. I think it might have a bit too much reverb on it but i can just turn up the dry track a bit and turn the wet one down.

You are using wayyyy too much reverb on the vocal track, makes the whole mix feel "cloudy". What exactly were you going for with two simultaneous tracks? If you are trying to make the vocals sounds thicker, I'd say you are much better off just having one lead vocal track with a reverb on it, just sounds a bit messy right now.
