I need more stuff

I'm trying to make the move to record on my PC. Currently I use my Roland VS-840. I'd like to merge the two. My question is: what do I need to get going? I've got a 27 GB hard drive, 128 RAM, and a 733 Pentium 3. I also have Acid Pro. My soundcard is currently Aureal Vortex SuperQuad. I've been looking at the Echo Layla, but maybe that's going overboard. I play guitar and bass and would like to find good drum samples and backgrounds and mix on the PC. Any suggestions on software, hardware is appreciated.

You've got everything you need to start. Layla is definitely overkill.

You could do the drums on the PC, send them out as one, or two tracks to the Roland, finish the song on the Roland, then send it back to the PC to burn CDs or whatever. That only requires a two channel sound card.

My soundcard has S/PDIF out, but there aren't any digital inputs on the VS-840. Can I split the cable into two RCA's without sacrificing quality? Would MIDI work?
 
Well, if you have no digital inputs on the VS 840, you'll need a different sound card (one with analog outs) for the previous scenario to work. The main point I wanted to make to you though is, you don't have to spend a thousand bucks to get two channels of audio into and out of your computer.

I'm not understanding your question about splitting the cable.

Im pretty possitive that card has analog outs....I believe it has 2 sets outputs...in case of front and rear speakers....
 
Thanks for all your input. I'll take another look at my soundcard tonight. I realize you're trying to keep me from overspending, but now I'm interested in the EMU audio production studio. I think I can get it for around $500. It seems to have a lot of nice things I could use. Does anyone have any experience with one?

you're talking about splitting the s/pdif, if i understand you right here. even if you could split the s/pdif cable into two (never heard about it),i'm afraid you'd have to have a s/pdif input since it uses a special protocol.
