I need a volume knob! Advice: preamp or homebrew?

Well, I built them at home and tried it between my Denon CD-player and Harman-Kardon Amp. I also tried it with my Dual record player.

I'm also going to try it with my Boss Mixer and Tannoy Reveal Actives, but I guess the effect will be the same.

In which case I might try with some different resistors.

This isn't my "strong point" either but I have been reading ALOT about monitoring and I don't think you want to mess with changing the impedance going into the monitors. This will defeat the flat (or close to level) frequency responce as you observed with the muted highs.

That leaves you with needing to find a way to get a different line out to your monitors from your mixer with some type of volume control. Inserting anything between the mixer and monitors may color the sound in a way that will not be the same as what is recorded onto your storage medium (tape or digital) and your mixes will not be the same as what you are hearing through the monitors.

Do you have the manual for this mixer? If not maybe someone here can find a copy to shed more light on solving your dilema before you lose your ears.

Well, I'm sorry, but I'm past this point aldready.

I NEED to stick something inbetween one of the line outs on the mixer that acts as a volume control. End of story.

I'm still experimenting with the resistance, since some people do say this should work (and why not, really? The output of the mixer should not change the sound just because the impedance doubles, for obvious reasons).

If somebody can tell me why this does not work, then fine. Saying "mmm, I don't really know but..." is no longer any help, since thats where I started this thread a couple of months ago. I need to go forward from that, and since nobody seems to know, I'm still experimenting.

It's not that I don't appriciate your effort, but I felt I needed to tell where I 'm standing. Now that you know that, maybe you will be able to offer me some help.

Thanks.
