I need a headphone preamp. Nothing fancy, just something to get the job done and have a clean channel and volume control. Suggestions?

I've got an OZ HR-4 ($100 used), a Symetrix SX-204 ($50 used) and a Rane HC-6 ($175 used). Any of them would work just fine. The Symetrix is the most basic (but it's cheap). The Rane is kind of the industry standard headphone distribution amp.

Before I tell you how great my Oz Audio HM-6 is, I'll just tell you whatever you end up with will be a headphone amp. There's no such thing as a headphone preamp.

Really, I would have thought you'd know the difference by know...... :p

Haha. Shut up. :(

All my thinking about getting a new preamp cause a small fruedian slip. :o

Anyways. I'll check it out. Add it to my "to buy" list if I like, along with like, 124081357 other things..

So. I can't find any info on it (where to get it). Where'd you buy it and how much do they run for?

And also, why would you need the 6 channel one when the 4 channel fits in your rack?

The main reason is that it would be pointless for me to have the headphone amp in my rack seeing as I have both a studio and a control room. And despite the fact that generally I've only used 4 sends to the HM-6, it's a solid unit.

I think I paid something like $279 for it, and that was several years ago.

We used Presonus HP-4s at work, and have had two fry in the past 6-8 months.....just recording, when suddenly there's a puff of bad-smelling smoke....my old one keeps working...
Bad batch, or change at the factory?

I've only had one presonus peice of equipment, and, granted it was only the blue tube, I wasn't really impressed..

I have two Oz HR-4, they are completely bulletproof, although I've never tried to have sex with them

Sweet. Wanna sell one? ;)

I need to stop buying gear, but I keep thinking, "one more piece and I'll have what I need for now" and then the next time I see something I want, it happens all over again. But this I really do need. Right now I've been unpluggin my monitors out to plug in my headphones, which, in turn, only plays out of one ear (duh!) and has no volume control, haha. Gets to be a pain in the ass, trust me. :(

I got the Presonus HP4 which seems to have a decent rep. Should do what I want it to...hasn't gotten here yet though.

I have a DC-Vibe, a variation on the Go-Vibe design and I really like it.

A Naiant headphone amp would be cool ;)

Now with a headphone amp, just plugging in headphones cuts off sound to the monitors, or is there something you'd have to do to turn the monitors down?

Nope. The headphone amp doesn't control anything else. What's your setup/signal path? You have to either just turn the monitors down, or route the signal so that it only goes to the headphone amp, and not the monitors.

For example, without knowing your gear or setup, something like:
Monitors going to Main Out L & R
Headphone Amp hooked up to Line Out 1 & 2
Assign signal to Main Out L & R
Bus signal to Line Out 1 & 2

Mute the mains when you don't want it coming out of the monitors.

If you're only using one set of headphones at a time, you might want to look more at something like a Samson C-Control or Presonus Central Station or Mackie Big Knob, depending on your budget. You connect your audio outputs into the unit, and from there you can route it to several pairs of monitors or a headphone output. Most of these units also give you a talkback facility, which can come in handy as well.

Well right now I've got this:
Monitors>>delta1010 outs 1+2
delta1010 ins>>mackie 1202 pre's

I have an Oz Audio HM-6 which I love and I also have the small Presonus 4 channel which also works just fine.

I like the OZ because I can feed a stereo mix to it and also 4 mono tracks or busses and each listener can adjust their own mix to their liking.
