If you were bored, had about $300 (shopping for used), woke up one day and realized your vocal mics (KSM27, SM7, MD421, and waitin' on an M130) were safe choices, and you wanted the most insane vocal mic possible, what would you do? Feel free to recommend any combination of microphones and medications.

Get an Audio Technica 4050. Great mic with multi-patterns. Should do the trick.

The BLUE Ball is not an "insane" choice on vocals at all. It sounds a lot like other medium quality dynamics.

That copperphone mic seems so cool. I seriously think I'm going to get it next.

how about a contact mic duct taped to the throat? sounds strange that is for sure.

agreed with comment re blue ball but let me clarify, it sounds like an sm57 stuck inside a wiffle ball.

My vote is for a Shure "green bullet" (520D) through a wah pedal.

The Copperphone is very cool.

The BLUE Ball, yeah, it's got the 'what the hell is that' appeal. It's pretty cheap so that's a maybe.

I don't get the AT4050 recommendation though. That seems very sensible. I mean at least the 3060 is a little crazy.

Maybe I'll look for a broken mic and cram some strange parts of my own in it.

Oooh, I've always loved the Green Bullet. Is there a mod to mount this thing on a stand?

Mine has a 5/8" threaded hole for a standard mic stand...I stuck an atlas LB02 http://www.activemusician.com/store/product.asp?sku=MC.LO2B&c=&sn=30&nav=a on it so I can set it on the end of a gooseneck and either play the harp through it on the stand or push a button and carry it in my hand. A 520B can be wired up High or Low Z: everybody wires them up for High Z to plug into a guitar amp. I wired mine Low Z and use an adapter for the 1/4".

Rooting around the BLUE website, I noticed the 8 Ball, a black condenser version. Is that cooler that blue? I mean it LOOKS cool, but there are a lot of black mics and not too many blue ones. Anyway there are none on eBay, and it looks like I can score a Blue Ball for $80 or $90, so:

I think I'll bite on a Green Bullet and grab a Blue Ball, and maybe spend my leftover spread on a down payment on a new violin for the kid. If nothing else, I'll leave the Ball up on a stand for appearances.

If I ever get around to building a mic, it'll have to be red.

Thanks all.

The Copperphone is a really cool, unique sounding mic. Great for capturing an old 30's or 40's sound, or a lo-fi sound. Here's a couple pics of mine in action.
