I need a < $300 mandolin.

Look for a slightly used Mid-Missouri or Big Muddy mandolin on auction or in a second hand store. Good mandolins, handmade here in central Missouri, all hardwood, but simple. Older ones are "Mid-Missouri", newer ones are "Big Muddy", but it's the same guy's shop.

My wife bought me a chinese made cheapie for xmas. I can't play more than two chords on it as the neck is way too tiny as are the fret spacings but I managed to crank out a passable sequence of single note runs as on Jangleything. It recorded well enough with an MSH1 aimed at the neck body joint AND a cheap chinese clip on mic ($10) - the two signals mixed for the result.
She bought it online from dealsdirect or similar for around $120 with gig bag.
It's fun to play around with but isn't an instrument I'll attempt to master for the reasons stated.

I bought a Fender for @ $260.

It' tunes and intonates properly, for now. Not very loud, but she'll do....
