I lost all my music!

hey guys,


today is the first day that my computer is sorta back to normal.. I reformatted several times.. I put in a second hard drive to save my tunes on, but I forgot to read the instructions on formatting and just thought I could save my music on the second hard drive and reformat the other one.. I forgot to disconnect the second hard drive BEFORE reformatting.. :(


I lost 14 GB's of mp3's.. Including 3 GB of my own stuff, and my entire CD collection that I converted to mp3's.

I'm going to be going back a few pages and trying to catch the tunes I missed..

I lost all my email addresses, everything. I do not like computers. If I missed something, drop me a p.m. if I don't catch it.. Anyone who I talk with through emails, please send again so I have your address..



Personal note to self.. Back up everything BEFORE reformatting.


5 posts a day minimum until I am caught up..

sorry about lost data ... but hey now you have an excuse to re-record it all and mix it with fresh ears .... and maybe through in a major chord or two :D

a note of empathy for you: i just spent the last week installing and uninstalling my os and applications a total of three times.

hey you (actually all of us) should add this to your note to self:
"always backup everything all the time on to another computer or on a cd or something that isn't attached the computer you work on."

this one is good to:
"always plug all of your music gear into a professional level surge protection unit."
 
I've been telling people for years that computers are unreliable pieces of shit.I had a full blown crash last year......motherboard went to shit overnight....hopefully you'll be able to get some of your tunes back by downloading them at nowhere etc....that sucks man.
 
sorry to hear about the meltdown. it's happened to my twice. and NOW i've finally learned my lesson...
 
I've always feared that thing would happen to me at some point. I have about of 3 GB of audio tracks on my hard-drive. All my riff ideas are there as well. If anything should happen to those, I'd probably lose my marbles :D ... well not exactly, but it would be a SERIOUS bummer.

In case you wondered if I've done any tunes while you were gone, I did none. I just finished a Metallica cover a few days ago that people have commented, though.

Dude... that sucks... sorry you lost all that stuff.

You might wanna look into a product by Norton called "Ghost". Usually I wouldn't touch Norton's garbage apps, cause most of em are resource hogs, but Ghost is a pretty handy tool. Now that I'm getting more involved with recording (and have stuff that's actually worth backing up), I may look into getting Ghost.

The worst fate that can befall any computer user.....So sorry for your loss (as bagpipes play in the background) :(

This should be a lesson to all of us that can feel the pain. Backup often and to 2 devices (I use CD and another HD) and keep the backups in separate places from the original and each other. I've lost more work at my job by not doing this and we are now very anal about it. I've recently gotten into the habit of burning CDs immediately after recording and taking them to another machine for just this reaseon. And WAYTF's suggestion about Ghost is not bad either, we do that with our most important machines at work :)

if that is a knock on Norton Anti Virus, I'd just like to say that I used to think the same thing about the software -

until about 3 weeks ago when a virus got to my system files, and a lot of data files that couldn't be repaired.

I lost a lot of music...becuase I got NAV a little too late. Now it runs all the time, does a great job...really doesn't seem to be in the way. but, my recordings wern't that good anyways

Sabbath - sorry to hear it man. you'll start banging out a new collection in no time.
 
Oh man, thats sucks. Like you don't know. Damn, hope you can have a fresh musical start. This sort of thing happens to everyone at least once. Once too many. I hate computers too.
 
Suck city.......well I know you'll be redoing everything with the new Sabbath sound so I can look forward to a lot of cool music while you get it up and running again. I'll e-mail you my e-mail.

not a knock man... NAV is a great AV app... but their "suite" of products that they bundle together has a tendancy to "take over your computer" and embed itself in all sorts of places, while also running numerous background apps. There are AV apps out there that are just as effective that don't use up so many resources.. that's all. But that's not to say that it isn't a highly effective AV prog.

Chris may be right, if you did not do an FDisk there may still be ways to recover data. It may cost a little but would be worth it if you absolutely need to recover :)
 
Wow, so sorry for the mishap...

If you did not format with the /U "unconditional" switch, AND you have not written to the drive yet, it may be entirely recoverable, I just helped my best friend recover from this VERY SAME scenario 2 weeks ago. It took Symantec's Nortun Utilities Unformat utility to make it happen, but he got back 4GB of stuff with only about 3% file loss from excessivley long pathnames.

Welcome home Sam! I kind of figured it was something like that. You had mentioned working on your computer, and I know how much you hate 'em! If it's any consolation, I lost 2 ENTIRE Sonar projects upgrading program versions. All recording gone. One of them I really wanted to come back to with fresh ideas at some point.

That just means you gotta put out some more stuff. And don't smoke pot before doing major computer stuff. Rule of thumb #1. A helpful hint from your cousin Sluice.

Learn from your mistakes. A well-known mantra in the IT field: "Something does not exist until you have TWO backups of it."

I'm going to prepare a little write-up/tutorial on Ghost. Stay tuned.
