I Like It That Way - Feedback Please

Hey, it's a good tune...solid composition and very accessible. I'm listening on a laptop, so hard to give in-depth mix comments, but on these tiny speakers at least, the rhythm guitar is kind of overpowering and there is a distinct lack of bass guitar. Even on these puny speakers, I can usually pick it up pretty good too.

The vocals seem a bit strained at times but I think they are well captured. Guitar licks sound nice, but I'd prefer them to be louder. Ok, sorry...after my initial disclaimer I've proceeded to dissect the whole thing :p:D! If you completely disregard this and rely on better trained ears with monitors, I will not be offended in the least :)!

Site looks way different...you have a drummer now? He's not on this track is he?

Thanks Heatmiser - I appreciate the dissection...that's what helps us mix our songs better and better. Listening again I think the rhythm might be a bit hot, I'll mention that to Mike....:D:cool::D:cool:

Here's another tune we just finished tonight. It's been a busy week while on vacation :). Words by me and Music by Mike.
Have a listen and let us know what you think of the mix.

Even on laptop speakers, heat nailed it. Left channel rhythm guitar is HUGE and the bass is very distant and bottom-focused. The whole mix is very unsettled... Not your usual blend, as it were. :) Sounds like a rushed first-pass-in-headphones kind of mix... :)

Thanks Llarion! Interesting observations by both you and heatmiser on the bass. Yesterday Mike and I mixed the .wav through Sonar 7 into KRK monitors. Before posting Mike reduced the bass after listening to the MP3 on headphones. Maybe I need to get Mike some new headphones for Christmas (oops hope he doesn't read this! ) You guys are really helping us out on this mixing thing!

I swear by my Beyerdynamic DT770 Pros, $199 at GC. Most linear, sophisticated phones I've ever listened to, including many 3x their cost. I don't mix in them, but I do use them as a test sled.

I saw a pair of AKG 271 at Long and McQuade - they seem nice too and are around the same price. I have the AKG 240's and I really like them.

Agree with the previous critiques...Rthy gtr is a bit to loud.....cool laid back groove...dig the solo guitar lines ...think maybe a instrumental break somewere in the middle might add a cool contrast to the song....

Thanks Queepy - Mike has mentioned he's going to try a remix using the comments here as a guide. I'll post that when he's done. Hopefully today we get a good ways through #3 for the week...

Nice groovy blues tune, Gerry.
I like the guitar work, especially the solo lines. Here and there I feel some timing issues but nothing serious. The rythm guitar sounds a bit thin soundwise. Its frequency is making it overpower the other stuff. Bass sounds just right. Nice work!

Joey :):):):)

In my ears the rhythm guitar & mellower lead licks lean to one side & there's not enough balance for the other side. Sometimes the licks fight each other for attention.
The bass does fill up the bottom end but it often doesn't have definition - it does sometimes but other not. I bet it sounds great solo'd but not quite in the mix.
Have you tried the octave replacement treatment on the bass?
-16db at 100hz Q1.4 & +5db at 200hs same EQ - moves the energy up from the bottom.
Cool song & vibe - nice vocal delivery Mike!
