I've been using a drum machine since before I started recording with a PC. I always programmed all my patterns, then recorded the audio output. This is still what I do, with the exeption that I now use MIDI to sync my machine tempo to Sonar. I'm now tired of the sounds in my drum machine, and am ready to delve into the world of triggered samples. I have zero experience in doing this. The manual would make sense if I had some frame of reference. Its new vocabulary to me. Anybody know some good articles aimed towards the TOTAL MIDI NEWB? I have a feeling a couple of you might.
 
It's really pretty straightforward. The drums patterns you make can be sent out the MIDI Out port as MIDI messages, and therefore trigger any other drum module or MIDI-compliant sound module. They can also be sent over to SONAR and recorded -- I'm talking about the MIDI data here -- which means that, if you don't like the sounds, you don't even need the drum machine at all, period. There will be some transition between figuring out how to program parts in SONAR as opposed to doing it on the drum machine, but I believe you'll find the extra flexibility of working in a real sequencer very liberating.

One thing that the drum machine might still be good for is for using as a MIDI controller, especially if you are used to tapping its little pads. It's really hard to manage the equivalent using keyboard keys -- pads are much easier.
 
Yeah, Most of what you've mentioned is the little I DO know. My goal is to program the patterns on my machine, then use the recorded MIDI info to trigger sampled instruments of my choice. For instance, can I turn any wav I want into a triggered instrument? Like, record a snare hit , then have that play from a touch of the pad on my drum machine? Or the recorded midi note from my drum machine? These are the mysteries to me.

Anyway...

In SONAR, click Insert --> DXi synth --> DR-008.

Dialog will open...

check Open these Windows :
Synth property pages
Synth rack view

yes.. :)

Now, DR-008 front pannel is opened... Load some presets...

Load --> Load settings, pick one... eg. Kenfen's Dogwood Kit.dr8

clicks on those pads...

Drums... :)

You can even load some wave file, and assign to any pad you want.

Now, lets make a good use of your drum machine :)

Hook it to SONAR's MIDI in. Play it to trigger the DR-008.

Remember last year during the big crash? That was right after I donated. Some of us, James, are marked, and the Dragon will soon blow his breath upon us, no matter how good we are, or how bad I am......

So far so good ....... well not really. I cant even get my drum machine (BOSS DR5) to transmit MIDI to Sonar. Not sure where the foulup is, but as far as I can tell, everything is enabled properly, but the little indicator in the taskbar shows no activity for the input when I play. Sonar will transmit Midi sync to the DR5. I tried swapping cables in case one was bad, but no dice. My Midi in and out are both enabled in Sonar. I'm at a loss.
