I keep getting an UNWANTED Live sound.

The Big Yellow Eye is a bit live also.. :D

Along with the above mentioned pulling the overs in close and getting rid or the redundant mics, do you need to deaden the drum area? I.e. small short early-type reflections might be counter to the in-your-face dry style, particularly after doing any compression.

If you want to get a very dead/tight/in your face sound, start mixing with the kick mic, then add the snare (top only), then your toms, then fill with the overheads. You don't need the room mics, as they'll add reverb, and the other kick and snare mics aren't necessary.

Be sure to close mic the guitars in a dead space (a closet loaded with clothes works well), and compress everything. Use a high ratio, like 20 to 1, with about 4-6db reduction happening. Compress the vocals really hard, roll out the lows, accent the mids.

This will make the mix tight and harsh, very nu metal.

(I wouldn't normally mix that way myself, but that's a good start!)

Compress everything!
