I just put this set on layaway...good?

Yamaha Stage Custom Fusion
16" HHX-plosion Crash used
14" AAX studio crash
14" AAX-elerator hi-hats
Pacific Hardware Pack (the cheapest one)

Except for the HHX, all the other things are new.
All this for $910.

Would you make any changes?

I personally don't see the need for a 14" crash cymbal. I don't see many people using one, and I personally don't like the sound. Too much of a cross between a crash and a splash. I'd rather have one of each!

What's your rde cymbal? You need a good ride cymbal.
 
Thanks for the response. Well the person that I'm helping to buy a kit would rather go a "cheaper" route with a second crash rather than a ride cymbal, since he's a crash heavy drummer.

Would a lower quality ride be better than the 14" crash?
Or something of the same price level?

I tried my hardest to stay away from B8's, ZBT's, and ZXT's. I'm assuming that rides are almost 2x the price of a 14" crash.

Any comments on the Sabian XS20 prepack?
 
I guess if you really have to, you could put it off...though I don't like that idea...;)

Just tell him that eventually he's gonna NEED that ride cymbal. He'll want a certain sound that only the either only the bell of a ride can produce, or a sound that tapping the top of a crash cymbal just can't produce. Crash cymbals suck for riding on -- that's why there are ride cymbals. :D

And if he's a REAL heavy hitter, look into heavy cymbals, too. IIRC, the HHX Series s pretty thick, but I'm really not very familiar with the Sabian line. Zildjian Z Customs is what I would get him. They're made for the heave hitters.

Hey, here's another thought. Get an 18" or 19" crash. Since he's a heavy hitter, he might like the sound of that bigger cymbal. And hey, it's a good start to get used to the feel of a ride cymbal. Granted, it won't sound like a ride cymbal, but it might feel like one. Anyways, it's just an idea, and IMO, it's a better choice to have the 16" and 18"/19" crashes rather than the 14" and 16".

Sorry for the rambling, I hope it makes sense. I have a tendency to ramble, and it'll make no sense...:eek:

Thanks! I never thought of an 18" crash. I guess you can tell that I'm not a drummer! :rolleyes: But I'm also guessing that an 18" crash will be considerably more expensive than a 14" crash. Hopefully I could find one used like the 16" HHX ($80). Thanks again, and ramble all you want. :D
 
I agree. 14" crashes are not very good. And they are absolutely no substitute for a ride cymbal. If you are looking for cost effectiveness, maybe you would want to try an 18" crash/ride. Lots of rock drummers use them. I personally have a broken down kit where I use a Zildjian A Custom 16" crash and a 20" ping ride. The ride is so resonate that I can strike it along the edge with the body of my stick, and it sounds like a phat low-toned crash. But when played near the bell with the tip, it offers the clarity and distinctive "ping" of a traditional ride cymbal.
