I just ordered a CAD VSM today and can't wait to try it out. I'll let you know what I think of it.

Has anyone used it and how does it compair to the Rode and SP stuff?

Sweet! That's on my list too! Let us know how you like it? :D

I just bought an AEA R84 and can't wait to try it out, but I need some advice on how to use it first.

I cannot post my questions in this forum......

Just be careful with the ribbon. I heard its best to have a pre with impedance settings like the Tampa for ribbons.

Just so you'll know AMS has the CAD VSM on sale for $479.00

I have a CAD VX2, which is similar to the VSM. The capsule of the VSM (Optima 110) is one of the two interchageable capsules that come with the VX2. The head amp is the same, both tube driven (12AX7). The line driver is different (VSM is FET, VX2 is tube driven - 12AY7). I've used both side by side. With the 110 capsule on the VX2, they are siblings. The VX2 is one sleeper mic, that's about all I can say. The VSM is very similar.

The VSM is great for guitar work and vocals, percussion, lots of stuff really. Excellent value in tube mics. I reach for it a lot on cabs and male vocals.

The VX2 is the sleeper mic though...but no longer available.

Use a pop filter and keep the bag over it when not in use. Other than that, it's not as fragile as you think and can be used where just about any other mic is used.

My biggest fear is that some doofus will walk up to it and start popping p's like crazy so I keep it covered.

Ok I just got home from work and got it unpacked (seems like Christmas morning already).

Wow!! This thing is big. It bigger than a coke can - almost twice the size. Looks very well made and feels kinda heavy.

It came in a nice ATA style case thats about twice the size of a shoe box.

I'll let you know how it sounds later tonight. I've got to find a vocalist because I can't sing

How is it for female vocals?

Never used it on female vocals. Not too many chicks come here. I'm just a small project studio doing night / weekend work as I have time.

Ok I had a chance to try it out. It has a very warm and rich smooth sound. I love the sound that the tube adds. A pop filter is a must. For $450.00 this is a great deal.

No I have not. But I can tell you from my experiance as a sound contractor that its a very good sounding mic. I like the richness and detail. Its very well balanced and not harsh. I'd love to try some on a Choir in a church

Apparently these are no longer available from AMS. Anyone know of any sources with a "clearance" price?
