A $15 vocal mic, to be more specific, but then I bought a SP B1 and a behringer mixer, and am now running that to my computer, but its not really sounding any different than the cheap sony mic when I've tried recording my guitar amp and vocals. How much difference does the sound card make in the equation? is there another reason?

It's Probably your soundcard. Behringers stuff its pretty good so it wouldnt be that. It could also be your cables.

IF you happen to be just starting out, maybe give it some time. Just moving a mic (any mic) to a new position makes huge changes. Switching mics is next down the 'greatest change' list.
If that's the case, I'd hate to see the card get the blame.:)

I agree with mixsit... however, everthing in the audio chain is very important... remember, pinching a garden hose affects the flow.

The soundcard and the mixer are both weakest links...Id address the Mixer first. maybe replace with a Soundcraft m series...affordable and a major step up.

Ah... My grandpa thought all rock bands sound the same. Probably needed better cables.
:D
