Pedullist - You're good for this BBS...stick around. You'll probably have more posts than me in about another week, lol. "Warm Mix," ... from your post time, it looks like you heard the remix.

Hehe, thanks. I was just thinking, am I still considered to be a newbie? I felt at home here quite fast, I must say...(I was of course, a regular poster at the Cakewalk BBS)

I like it here. Good people, good music! Inspiring and motivating. Nice atmosphere!

I was surprised so many people seem to dig my dutch music. That was really weird to discover, that no one cares about the sickening dutchness... :)

You shouldn't be surprised, really. Most of the people that hang out here a lot seem to listen to a bunch of different *KINDS* of music...that, I think, is the true mark of a musician - It's like sports, kinda'. I'm not a huge sports fan, but for the people that I know who are, it doesn't matter what sport is on ("Lebanese Underwater Curling"), if it's on ESPN at 4a.m., they'll watch it...and LIKE it!

Besides, your mixes are killer.

Lebanese Underwater Curling....LMAO! :D

And thanks!

Hey Chris,

How goes it? That sucks about your hand, man. My Dad broke his wrist a few years ago in about 100 places (the hospital said it was the 2nd worst break they had ever seen) and he was not able to play guitar anymore :( ... He actually kind of learned how to play left handed after that ... I always admired him for that. :)

Anyway, enough about me...No worries about you not having full use of your hand, this tune is great! Very deep and the violin works well. Was I hearing some backwards stuff going on? I like the arrangment you have here...keep it simple and it works well. Great vocals as usual.

I have nothing bad to say about this, and I haven't read any other comments, so you probably already have advice anyway...

Get well soon!

:)

Great vocals, actually ,all is great except for the drum sound, snare sound kind of hollow, to my ears. I didnt hear any hiss or any artifacts as some above did.
Pretty close to perfect here.

I hope your hand injury heals with no lingering problems, Ive been unable to play myself for quite a while due to a back problems. Getting old can really suck sometimes.

Thanks for that great post
Peace
Bill

good stuff man, i really enjoyed this cover.

much better than the DC version. good guitar work for a gimp..

I had the original version yesterday...and then got the new one. I can't really make out Jamie that much...I mean, it's obvious that she's in the second one (the reason I downloaded it..becuase people were commenting on her, and I didn't hear her in the first). Maybe it's the SM58...or, the fact that in that range, you guys sound pretty similar.

At any rate, sounds great. I like what you did with the a capella break in this one..and the delayed entrance on "come back" - I assume the dixie chicks do that, but..I wouldn't know. nice touch.

I`m with ya wildcard man. With emotional substance and absolute sincerity in the delivery it don`t take much much more than that.

One small thing left out in the debate going on a while back is often overlooked and found as a trailing subnote in the first paragraph introduction of most music theory texbooks. ".....in order to evoke a response from the listener."

I think your voice works very well with this mic preamp combination.

listening on monitors and can't find anything to talk about. sounds just fine to me. maybe the snare is just a hair to loud, but the drums fit this thing like a glove.

oh, one more thing....turn up the autotune..........

erichenryus, a guy just waiting for another chance to discuss autotune.

boydrj - Hey man; long time no type, eh? I once saw a man with no arms play flamenco guitar for the pope...WITH HIS FEET!...so I have no room to bitch. Thanks for the nice stuff.

wfaraoni - thanks for the ears...I was hoping maybe some of the hiss got taken care of. I hear you on the drum sound...I had a really hard time finding a loop that had a snare about 4X louder than the kick, which is what this needed...so I was kinda' stuck with the sound. I don't have a great history with drums, lol. As for your back, I recommend large quantities of percodan...it may not help, but it's fun.

wes480 - Dude...I'm seriously impressed at that critique. you totally proved that you listened to both, lmao. As far as the Dixie Chicks version, I've only heard it once; but I've listened to the original for years...so I couldn't help but pretty much copy what I could. One of the coolest parts about Bruce Robison's version is his wife's (Kelly Willis') backup vocals. Jaimee likes the song too, so it seemed a natural to have her do the backups...but it's been like pulling teeth lately to get her to record... (*ugh*) ... She went with me to a gig in Houston on Friday night and was up SUPER late, so she was definitely not into the recording thing yesterday...and she's got a ripping bad cold, and...well, she just sucked, lmao (it's okay, she knows it)...I mixed 'em low. I'm hoping she'll take another run at it, but I'm no stage parent :D ...if she does, she does. If she doesn't, she just gets mixed REALLY low, lol. Anyway, I totally appreciate the post.

Toki987 - Exactly...The communication aspect is, to *me*, the whole deal. I fail at this daily, every once in awhile, it's cool for me to just study somebody else's work...no better way to study something than to try to reproduce it, I guess. Anyway, I wish you'd been one of my music teachers growing up. :D

erichenryus - thanks a lot for listening again... Is your studio up yet? Is your heater off yet? LOL...can you record stuff yet? As for the autotune, there are generous, HEAPING amounts of it, but it's on the fiddle, lol. Again, thanks. I guess the hiss is gone.

Chrisharris,

I believe that this is the first time I am hearing your voice and musicmanship. The thread definitely deserves the five stars it currently has.

You have a very good singing voice, good taste and obviously good marketing skills.

I listened to the song, and it might have broken producer/radio rules, but you and I both know that it did not break any wildcard rules.

It also proves the point that the music matters far more than what it was recorded with.

Funk on!

Hey ChrisHarris,

I heard someone refer to you as a lawyer man. Are you a lawyer?

If so, can we talk? I am trying to get into law school next year, after my MBA, and I would like to talk to another lawyer about what its really like.

thanks.

Thanks man. You've actually heard one other a looooong time ago (photographic memory here, lol), but it was pretty different ("Supposed To Do"). Electric sorta' rock kinda' thing...that tune was yet another fine example of how NOT to write a marketable tune, but you gave it a good wildcard rating ;)

For your review, and for being my computer golf inspiration and nemesis, I thank you... :D

Hey Chris--Real good to have you back. Your performance, especially vocally, was superb on this one. I really like your style--mean that! Looking forward to more.

Recording was nice too--guitars sounded great. Damn--you're gonna make me get off my ass and put something new up!

Good to hear something from you man. I glad you're obviously gonna perservere and learn a new way to play. It'll be hard for a while but a year or two from now ( I know you whippersnappers have a hard time thinking that far ahead :D ) you'll be at home with whatever you end up with, whether it's a thumbpick or some other method and then it'll all be ok. Trust me, I've been thru it. ;)

As for the tune....it's great as is almost everything I've ever heard from you. You have a wonderfully emotive voice and some increasingly good skills at recording. Sure am glad to have you around. Jamee sounds good but I agree, you can't really tell that it's her. It sounds like a generic voice.....not necassarily a bad thing on this tune.

And your song?....I'm still working on it. I have a sudden plethora of gigs and between my piano tuning buisiness and playing 5 nights a week, it's kinda slowed me down, but I'm on it!!:D

I listened to this last night but was too lazy to reply.I dont have anything to add to what has already been said except that this has to be the most hiss I have ever heard on one of your recordings.LMAO!;)

It's tight all the way around. The vocals are stellar.I picked up on daughters background stuff in the left speaker right away.Excellent touch..If you never make it as a big time singer/songwriter there is always the hope of riding the wave of your kids success.:D

I enjoyed it Chris.5*****!

Wow.He's married to her?She has been one of my favorite singer/songwriters for the last 12 years or so.She's a major talent......learn something new everyday.LOL

That is the damn truth Cyanjaguar! Btw, I think your voice is a wildcard. and while we're on the topic of wildcards, you gotta check out 'The Third Engine's a Charm'. the whole cd is a wildcard!

chrisharris, i now have an isolation room for recording vocals and guitar or any other small instrument........and a fucking awsome drum kit but nowhere to record it. i'm going to be posting again soon.

chris, sounds good man.........very warm sounding.....maybe you should record everything with a sm58:D

very nice smooth production..........the drums sound really good, i like them a lot.......

the violin is great.........you becoming quite a producer to match your performance skills.......very nice

chrisharris,

Mmmmm.................There may just be somethin' to this "Captain Hook" approach to geetar playin. :D

Another clean production. Nice vox, smooth delivery.
I confess that I don't get country at all (too many drugs in my youth) but this is a nice story and a fine job.

You Da Man

Joel
