My equipment:

Workstation Keyboard: Roland x7.
Laptop: Sony PCG-GRT360ZG
- 3.06 Ghz, 512 mb ram, pretty good i guess.
Software: Acid Pro 4.0, CoolEditPro, some other shi...

Aight now look.. I got the equipment, I got the talent, I got a hard time putting things together.

Theres something about rap music that makes it sound different than other kind of beats. I can't get the basic instruments that make that specific beat. Like the consecutive repeating Tst-tst-tst-tst that alternates in speed (found a lot in Cash money Hotboy tracks). I always thought a computer with the right software makes the best mixer, but i might be wrong. I guess my main problem is starting from scratch and making a completely original beat, without using samples, and getting a professional sounding track. I can sit there and tap my drum pad on the keyboard all day, but it wont go together like the drums in songs i hear everyday because i cant control my finger movement exactly the way i want it to sound.

Any suggestions? Any Roland keyboard users out there? Help.

The sounds that your hearing in Cash Money songs and a lot of rap songs (especially South rap) are hi-hats. If you're running it through the Roland, most of the time it is done with the arpeggiator setting on your board. Do you have a set quantize setting on Acid? That's just the beginning. Sometimes when I use faster hi hats like the ones you're talking about, I record it in sections (with midi of course...I wouldn't DARE do that on an audio track). A computer with good software can be a good mixing device, but without some dedication to what you do, it won't amount to anything. I'm not saying that you're not trying to be dedicated, but it sounds like you're relatively new to beat making (correct me if I'm wrong) and that takes a while to understand and more importantly have your own style and procedure of doin' things. I can't say for everyone else, but it took me a year of learning different things just to get started and then I seem to notice improvements about every 3 to 6 months (even to this day).

thats whats up

yo good looks on gettin back at me. i've been makin mad beats using loop samples and modifying them with different software. But now, i was looking to start makin completely original beats. Hopefully this'll work out right. I deff got dedication, but I just got this keyboard a couple of months ago, and I been workin 9 hours a day, so I got little time to stay focused on music. But now I got fired, so ima get on that, most def. Some shit happens for a reason fam.

good looks cuz

Try out Fruity Loops. It takes a while to get the hang of but its a decent sequencer program with a shit load of effects and a few one shots to work with. Im guessing thats probably the kind of thing your looking for.

I know quite a few people who use Fruity Loops (or called FL Studio these days) who get pretty damn good results once they really learn on it. And it's not that expensive to boot if budget is a problem.

FL is cool, but MobbEuro theres so much more that you need to learn. My first bet would be to learn MIDI before anything.Hook up your keyboad via MIDI and learn to use your outboard gear, and then you can get into soundfonts, and all.

If he learns FL first he will settle for that and will think that its all he needs.

I use FL only for my drums,But in everything else its weak and limited, unless you got A LOTof patience.

yeah, that's what I use. I'm venturing off into other things right now, but for my Album i pretty much produced it with FL Studio.

Dont get me wrong, I've been producing for over a year now. I used to have an old weakk Casio keyboard that I would connect with my laptop, but the lag was too much so I got the Roland. The thing about the roland is that you dont have to connect anything via usb because its an all in one workstation. I can record, mix, sample, edit, and master all on the same instrument. The only time I connect the USB is when I transfer samples to and from the keyboard.

About Frooty loops, I never tried that program. I'm gonna try to download it off limewire, or maybe buy it. I do have a DVD disc with 7 gigs of samples from all levels of music that I use with Acid to make tracks. I've made a few CDs just with that, and I guess that's sort of what Frooty Loops is like. But I'm thinkin that if you're tryina get signed and the label figures out you're using frooty loops, that just drops your credibility in their perspective. But for just drums and rythm, thats deff alright.

Quite a few professional releases were done on Fruity Loops. It's becoming a use what you can use industry. I prefer Reason and Cubase myself. If you decide to buy FL Studio, I think it's under $150

Yo, I'm about to put up a sample of one of my tracks I made today on my soundclick site. It has the faster hi-hats like Cash Money and a lot of south rap uses, but I did an arabic vibe on it for my album I'm workin on. Check it out on my link in a few mins.
