Well, as promised, I got my Yamaha 2816 this day. It is quite an impressive looking box. The manual is about an inch and a half thick and it was written by someone with a very THICK HEAD.

But, I anticipated that since I have the Yam DX-7 synth which took a long while to fathom.

Caution: if you get one of these boxes, be SURE TO READ THE SHUT-DOWN procedure. If you just snap off the switch, you can damage the hard drive, etc.

I've spent the day reading the manuals; it appears to work like this; select the menu, select the track, select the effects, etc. It is not unlike the MD8; however, it is much more complex since it can do so many things.

I will get back to this forum when I've had time to trip through the steps and record something. The effects package looks good. Well, I just may have two other effects boxes going into limbo. BUT, I HAVEN'T UNPLUGGED MY MD8 YET.

Holy Shit! Was their engineering staff on the take from the recommended HD manufacturer? How is it that a PC can have its power removed and nothing will happen other than an annoying start-up lag while this thing will self-destruct?

If that's the case I'd recommend a UPS (I like Tripp-Lites, but APCs will work as well); mine has come in handy when using an external standalone CDRW burner on location.

Congratulations.....You think its awesome now...Well just wait until you get stuck into the automation and you'll really see what this sucker can do. I've got its bigger brother (AW4416) to which I upgraded from the 1680 and I couldn't be happier. You'll love how it sounds, and It really isn't THAT hard to use.....seriously, with this thing you can concentrate more on the actual mix and the sound rather than fiddly little things than you probably previously had to do.

I noticed a quality difference IMMEDIATELY with the Yamaha to the point that a CD player plugged into my 1680 and thru my events sounded shite, but when plugged into the Yammie it sounded rich and warm and how it should......So its all good

.........I'm Green with Envy!!!!:) I went to Sammy's 2-day to check out about delivery of the Alesis HD24 and had the opp'tunty to witness the AWESOME capabilities of this fine piece of gear.
I was impressed by it's AD/DA gizmo's,recording time,ease of use,
large screen and smooth operation! you gotta' a great DAW there
and can't wait to hear 1 of your jammy's recorded on it!

Thanks for the input. I'd be happy to send you something when I figure out how to do something on this box. But, because of the upgrade and the technology involved, [I'd like to BBQ the ones who wrote the manual, but who would'nt], I think it will work out.

I remember when I got my first Tascam 488 -- Yowie, Zowie....the manual was pretty awesome. But, I'll just keep pushing the buttons until something works.

a little off topic, but you can scratch a hard drive when you remove the power from a computer without shutting it down. A rare occasion, but some sector damage can also happen. Just thought I'd throw that in so it doesn't sound like "Let's all just shut our computers off with a light switch" kind of deal.

multitracker shutdowns

I've been reading thru the online manuals. All the current multitrackers with internal hard disk that I've seen have a shutdown routine to be followed.
 
Hmmm,the fostex Vf-16 can be shut right down. Just flick the switch. I wonder if its harmful to the drive?
 
Yo Hornet,I got my AW2816 today.All i've been able to do so far is load and listen to the demo song through headphones,but wow,it sounds awesome.I'm gonna ty to get to sleep early tonight so I can get yp early,turn the phone off,and go nuts with it all say long.I can't wait to hear my mics through the pres,and my bass and guitars through the guitar input.I've got a feeling I'm gonna love this box.Later...

You're going to love the box -- no question. I've been scouting the posts and comments and about 97% are very positive about the 4416, as well as the new 2816.

Yeah, there are many menus to go through; it's about the same as doing PC recording only the SOUND is very good.

I'd love to send the Yamaha manual writers on a non-return suvival show that I direct!!!

Make sure you check out the "shut down" procedure on page 12, I think, because it is proscribed and just flipping the off switch could result in unpleasant results.

I'm glad I decided to take time and review the manual as well as the tutorial manual.

Yamaha also sent me another manual in French which I just tossed out, Voila!!! Thanks Yamaha. I can understand either manual just about the same, French/or/English.

Let me know how things go Ray and let's exchange any information we come upon regarding the operation of the 2816.

I put down some acoustic guitar tracks on the 2816 today,it was pretty easy to get around with the clearly marked keys and the screen.One thing I really,really dig on this box is the dedicated 4 band EQ and dynamics on every channel.I used an Ovation Adamas which has an XLR out,and a Rode NT1 and recorded each output to a seperate track,and had a lot of fun using different EQ and Comp patches fronm the Libraries to geta lot of interesting sounds.Another way cool feature is thetrack delay,which I used to good effect on these guitar tracks,'cause the piezo pickup is real bright with a strong attack,and it tends to get noticed by the ear more than the mic track,so I delayed the piezo track about 6 milliseconds and it really added depth to the sound.

Sounds good to me. I usually plug my drum machine and synth directly into my MD8 and lay down the chords and basic rhythm tracks. I plan to do the same with the 2816. Basically, I overdub what I want and sometimes put in a vocal. With a couple of singers, I use CD background direct most of the time. I imagine I can pump in a CD background with no sweat on the 2816. I'll soon find out.

I'm still reading the manual and haven't had time to sit down and push buttons. But, I appreciate your information.

Yo Hornet,Here's a suggestion: load the demo song off the CD that came with it if it's not already on your machine's Hard Drive ("Can You Feel It?") and use the Tutorial which walks you through what they did with all the tracks on the song.Fun for the whole family! C'est vrai que tu arrives a lire le mode d'emploi pour le AW2816 aussi bien en Francais qu'en Anglais?

I mailed them back to DeGaul, unfortunately.

The demo song is already loaded in the hard drive; first time I turned on the box I watched it load on the view screen.

This is going to be one fine box I think.
