Ok, I am a little hard headed. I know deep down that I can't master and shouldn't master my music. So I should take it to a Mastering Studio.

There isn't one around this area and I wouldn't trust them if there were. Have any of you sent your material off? Does this method even exist? What can I expect and what do I need to send?

Final mix no compression, no reverb, etc.

Oh yeah, sending stuff in to someone else is done a lot. Check out this guy. I did some stuff with him earlier this year; it turned out real nice and he was real reasonable. His name is Oliver.

Hard to believe in a city that size there aren't at least a handful of mastering studios. In a pinch, there used to be one up the road in Springfield, IL called DRC Studio. You could check if they're still around and what their prices are.

Obviously a lot of musicians live in the St. Louis area, and they record music. Ask a few of them who they use. St. Louis may not be Nashville, but there's still a lot of music there.

There is a lot of music here. I don't have a STL directory, but someone in STL must run a decent mastering house.

Ask Track Rat. He's farther ahead in this game than I am. He would probably know of any mastering houses in the STL metro area.

I'm not sure that I'm ready for mastering or not, so I don't worry too much about it.

there has got to be mastering houses in St. Louis...

someone compressed the snot out of the indie release of Nelly's first single.

when I lived in St. Louis 10 years ago...there weren't any good mastering studios at all... much less any decent, state of the art recording studios, unless you want to count the now defunct Technisonics. KBK studios tried with a nice setup, but lasted a couple short years.... There are/were several mid sized places...but nothing with a Neve/Studer, or similiar... Even the big ad agencies did their stuff in NY or elsewhere. I believe there is a new kick butt studio there now, with $$$ invested in equipment..the name escapes me...but no mastering setups of any decent caliber that I have heard of. Btw, the live music scene there has always been great, imo. Track Rat will verify that for me, I am sure...as he was/is part of it. I used to play there 25+ years ago too!

It depends on where you want to go with it. Of course, mastering houses can do a better job than you can, but there is still a place for home mastering. Those mastering houses are expensive, and if you suspect that your song is just going to be handed out to friends and relatives, then you have to ask yourself if it's worth it. I guess the cheaper, and slightly better, than home alternative would be to take it to a regular recording studio. Maybe they have some nice EQs or a Finalizer or something. That way you wouldn't spend near as much.

check out what spinrecords is doing in his thread, getting everyone here to master it, sounds like fun
