I gave an old X-1000R new life.

I recently purchased an old broken down X-1000R. It was in sad shape. It looked as though it had sat in a barn for twenty years.

I opened her up and replaced the belt. I also disassembled all of the linkage for the capstan movement and cleaned and oiled every moving part I could find. I used Armorall to clean up the rubber. I spent some time with the Q-tips and alcohol cleaning around all the knobs and everything that needed it.

She seems to run really good now. I played a tape for about an hour last night and it behaved like a new machine. Now for the stupid question.

How can I tell if the heads need demagnetized? Is there some symptom that I should notice? …or should I just buy a tool and do it anyway?

Do it anyway, BUT ... BUT be very, very certain you're doing it correct as you might destroy the heads with one wrong move. This is no joke.

Great you saved a nice Teac.
I wouldn't use Armorall cleaning the rubber.
There is special rubber-cleaner for the pinch-roller and belt.
About demagnetizing the heads... some people never do it and say it's not worth it.
I don't agree about that, buy a demag and use it every 30-40 hours.

Good Luck :)
