I feel so dumb...how do you lip-sync to your song while you're recording?

I've got a lot of music video ideas, but the 1 thing that baffles me is how do people lip-synch as they're recording to that exact piece of the song? I don't get how they do that and then fit it in to the final music video. Can someone explain this whole process to me? Sorry I'm a total noob to this video thing!

The easiest way is to play the song out of a somewhat loud stereo while you are recording so the camera mic can clearly hear the music. In post-production all you have to do is import the song into your editor and then sync the video tracks to the song by matching up the camera audio with the song file you imported. This can be a pretty tedious process, so if you plan to do a lot of music videos then it might be worth investing in a good editor that has multi-cam capabilities and will sync up your video files for you.

Agree with Guitarplyr82.

If you are doing this for anything less than network television distribution, get a program that does video editing for your computer. I used Sony Vegas for my vid and it worked fine for what we were trying to accomplish. It allows you to have multiple video and audio tracks. You can use transitions to cut up the singing into shorter clips with different camera angles and that will give an illusion that you are not lip-syncing. I think that if you are unfamiliar with the song that you are singing, the worst thing you could do is try to sing the entire song in one take in front of the camera. Get familiar with the song and do a few takes.

As Guitarplyr82 said, once you fly that raw footage into your computer, you can take out the audio from the recording that you just filmed. Just about any video software I have ever played with will separate the video from the audio into separate tracks. Import your song into the program and delete the audio from the video shoot making sure that the two audio tracks are sync-ed before you delete the audio from the video shoot. Lots of work, but also lots of fun. Good Luck!

Timecode. But not every device offers timecode, so there's also PluralEyes by Singular Software.

You dont need timecode or fancy software, any video editor will do.
Sony Vegas Studio is only $50 and I've done music vids, plays and commercial projects.

Guitarplyr82 had it right in post #2.

You just have to do it several times to get the takes you need,
then replace the audio with the good stuff. It's tedious but once
you do it a few times it's cake.

Thanks to everybody who answered!! It really helped me a lot

Use a boom box that the camera mic picks up, then use that as a reference for matching it up to the original audio track in your NLE. then mute/delete the location audio.

everybody pretty much nailed this one.. but i will add ..
1) i try to do my scenes outside somewhere i can blast my music out of my car.. and instead of a lip sync i actually "perform" my verse ... then in the software everything lines up correctly and easily
2) if i cant play music from my car, i use earbuds and try my best to make them un-noticeable and repeat 1) -
