I don't know what I'm doing

My reel to reel recorder is pretty messed up, and have put over 50 hours into it. Fixed some problems, but created many new ones. After me trying to fix it up, only 3/8 tracks work! :rolleyes:
Now I could care less how I record, as long as it sounds decent and is RELIABLE. And seing I'm 17 and have no money or expirience, I don't have too much of a choice unless I want to wait foreever to record. So I bought a soundcard, an EMU 0404.

Please bare with me, I'm completely new to digital recording.
So I installed the souncard inside the computer, and then I installed the software that came with it, and it said something about there was a problem and couldn't run or something......
I don't know why, I've got XP, and it's supposed to work with it. Maybe it does work, I don't know how to test it!

Lets keep it simple. I've got audacity and want to record off that as a test. When I plug my mic and pre into the 1/4" TS input of the new soundcard, it makes no sound and doesn't record anything. Is there some standard thing I've got to do to be able to record off the new soundcard? Thanks.
 
ok, so now my computer says the soundcard IS working, but how to I select it so I can record with it? When I press record, nothing comes through.
 
To fix the well problem, umm I think there is a problem or maybe it just can't run or something... all I can think of to say about this is RTFM.

If the soundcard is working then it is probably a configuration problem. Make sure that onboard sound is disabled (BIOS setup during bootup). Next make sure your software reconizes your soundcard. That is thru one of the options in your software window. Refer to any .pdf readme files that came with your software. You will find out all that info there along with any patches that you may need to download for your OS. Most software defaults all of these things, then again it all depens on ver. of software to OS and type of hardware. Readme files usally notes proper configuration. Hope this helps.
 
now it says "There is something wrong with your sound Hardware"

when I try adjusting the volume of "recording" under the voice tab in the sound option in the control panel.......
 
On second thought, seeing how handy you were with the tape deck, bring your computer into school and have the teacher in the technology department take a quick look at it for you. If you can't do that then just ask a friend that is computer literate to take a quick look at it for you. You probably have to reinstall the soundcard.
 
Don't you usually you have to install drivers first and then the hardware?
 
All you have to do is install your drivers which are on the cd, then go to start, control panel. Switch to classic view click on sound devices, click on the audio tab,in sound playback select the audio card you bought, same with the sound recording. Do the same with voice. THIS should be all that needs to be done.
