I can't even get the darn thing off the ground. Can anyone help me? I realize it's probably stuff you've dealt with a hundred times but please be patient.

I like to start out by laying down a drum track. According to Cubase's documentation I should be able to use the Drumstick Tool to do this. I can't even locate the Drumstick Tool! I've spent I don't know how many hours on this one thing alone. I'm cracking up.

Can you tell me how to start a project, please? I've used the booklet that came with the software. I've read and reread the pdf file. My god!

Thanks.

When you start Cubase, does it give you an option of what type of project you would like to start? If so, select the one you want (default will give you some audio and midi tracks to work with). If not, select "new project" from the file menu. The program will prompt you as to where you would like the files saved. Create a new folder for each project and keep them in a handy place.

Make sure your soundcard is configured properly. To do this, go under the devices menu and look under both VST inputs and VST outputs, to make sure your card is selected for both. Also, under VST instruments, select the drum machine (LM-7)

Back on your track list, select the LM-7 as the input source on Midi track 1. Once you have your midi track set-up, you'll need to use the pencil tool (which should be available at the top of the screen in the pointers toolbar) to create a portion of the midi track. Just click and drag the pencil over part of the track. Then, right click on the portion you have just created and select midi --> drum editor. That will take you to the midi drum editor, where you can use the drumstick to add beats.

It sounds complicated, and it is, but you'll get the hang of it.

SCRUBS:

I appreciate your information. Thanks for taking the time to respond to my question.

I got as far as right-clicking on the selection I had made with the pencil tool. But there was no option for selection "midi --> drum editor." I came to a pulldown menu which contained eleven items, "MIDI -- Merge MIDI In Loop" being the closest to what you were referring.

What should I do next? Please advise.

Here's a screenshot. Hopefully, the resolution is o.k. When you right click on the selection, the MIDI menu should contain "open drum editor." If not, I don't know what to tell you. You might check in your devices menu and make sure you have a MIDI device selected (your stock soundcard should have at least basic MIDI capability, so select that driver and see). Cubase SE comes with a quick start guide that takes you through using VSTi (virtual instruments). It should also be available in the help menu. Good luck.
