Gone
They're everywhere...they won't go away...in my TV...at the movie theater...in my stereo....stop it...stop using noise gates....you're not fooling me....digital remastering does not mean "apply a noise gate"....there is nothing wrong with hiss....people who don't like hiss are mentally instable...seek help....and turn off your noise reduction too...it sounds like shit....your crash sounds like a garbage can lid and your snare sounds like a mop bucket....please....for the love of whatever you love....stop it....just stop it....listen around you...there is noise everywhere...constantly....it's natural...you like nature don't you?....what's wrong with you that you don't like nature?...were you hurt?....I'm sorry....but there is help....just stop using man...just stop....sure it'll be hard at first...but you'll see, people will respect you more....nobody ever says, "wow, that's the quietest recording I've ever heard, congratulations!"....trust me...I'll still be your friend...and your mom will still love you...your mom is like nature...you love your mom don't you?...god what is wrong with you?....remember the rules of nature...if the noise is too loud, there's nothing you can do about it....if the noise isn't all that loud...there's nothing you need to do about it....that's it...it's very simple....your "sonic cleansing" plugin was written by a pimply faced loser that listens to creed and the offspring...he thinks that the difference between digital and analog is that hissing sound....you don't want to be like that guy do you?....you don't have to be like that guy....I can help you...we can all help you....we love you...we respect the natural ambience of your home studio...we find the occasional backfiring VW bug background noises to be somewhat charming....you probably need to work on your levels anyway...all this other crap is for show...it's for professionals...and usually they only use it to impress producers....you don't want to be a producer do you?....it sounds like you're on your way to becoming a producer....you need to stop and take inventory of your life and the forces within it...the people you love...the sounds you hear....you can't fake these things my friend...stop trying...less is more....less is more...less is more...

The King of Rant has spoken and spoken well!!!!!!
Hiss is cool as long as it doesn't overwhelm a recording.

Yeah... but, there really is no excuse for hiss in the first place... unless your gain or recording levels are out of whack, or you're using really REALLY cheap gear (even much of the basic stuff is relatively quiet - 'cept for those artifacts!). The only time any hiss at all would be obvious is using cassette multi-tracks, and even then it can be minimized to a great degree simply by paying attention to levels and leaving Dolby/DBX engaged.

Unfortunately, I think the most common reason for hiss problems in recording has more to with pilot (or in this case, recording engineer) errors than recording media issues.

I have one of those thingies on my ALESIS #^#) (3630) and thought that it would be good for playing live but I was never able to get any setting that would be useful. Part of that problem could be attributed to it being a 3630. I understand the concept of the gate but don't think it realy has much use for recording. If there is enough noise in the signal chain to require a gate, you would be much better off attacking the noise at the source rather that trying to mask it.

And before anyone starts razzing me about my 3630, As soon as I am able, I intend on getting something better (I bought it about a year before finding this wonderful place).

slack,

what was that you said about creed?
Do you want to take this outside? :)

The funny thing is, c7sus, that as I was reading your comment, I was chewing on a piece of caffeinated gum and drinking a mellow yellow. No shit!

Leave him alone C7us! He's listening for any hiss thru your stethoscope!
BTW, does your stethoscope have a noise gate?

My producer says... "Always question authority... and gate everything..." :)

Check out the MP3 clinic contribution of PaLic recorded in his closet on tape. No need for a gate 'cause ther ain't no annoying hiss. I haven't squeezed it out of him how he pulled this off. But I was impressed.
I don't know the 4-track tape machine used.
I'll be embarassed if he says he used 1" tape..... :)
The mics used were Audix and Oktava.
From the Sound Room? Who knows?
My first demo tape was done at a studio (actually the living room of the keyboard player) we dubbed SSS for the sound that came out of an old 2-track Ampex and for the fact that it was a studio on State Street in Albany, NY.
That's right: The State Street Studio.
Man I hate hiss with a passion.
Sounds like somebody pissing on my music!
I'm listening to Horace Silver's CD "Song for my Father" CD and it is a friggin' hiss fest. I'm glad I'm alive in the 21st century with some time left to record at the new standard of quietude.
