I went on some advise about a microphone and ended up getting a Rode NT1. It sounded pretty good on the persons recording so I got it. But now Im stuck with a mic that I dont think fits my vocal style.

This may sound strange, but Im very uncomfortable testing out mics at the store, so I was wondering what mic would be good for me. I have a medium vocal range, and dont sing really loudly. I need a mic that will pick me up clearly and not sound muffled.

heres a link to a song i did with my vocals on it to give you an idea on what may work.

yeah, I kinda know what you are saying. I'm in the same shoes that you are in. I bought the mic last year because I heard someone else's recording and it was nice and sounded close to professional. Then when I used it for myself, it gave a muffle typed sound. I don't think this mic suits me becuase I sound better on a cheap $20 aiwa mic that came with my stereo than this one. For reals. The whole concept of testing the mic at the store makes me feel a bit akward myself. You feel kinda stupid when the guy just stands there staring at you while you talk, sing, or rap on it.

I was thinking of getting a different mic, like a AKGC414 TL. I don't know though, maybe if I could mease with a better pre amp and eq, I might be able to pull it off with this one. I use the rode EMP pre amp right now and it is a pretty good pre amp, but I'm thinking of getting the dbx 376 for the extra options and it's tube (which might be better).

Downloading the song right now and can't wait to hear it.

I sold my NT1 on e-bay and used the $ to buy a Studio Projects
C1 and haven't looked back since. You may want to check out
www.studioprojectsusa.com for some reviews.
The store where I bought it let me try it first and it sounded
first rate on my voice. I understand about singing/talking etc.
in the store, it took me years to get (relatively) comfortable
singing in front of strangers!

P.S. sondriven, did you ever have a chance to look at the
instructional singing books I recommended to you?
They've really helped me out and saved a lot of $
compared to taking lessons.

If this mic is only a couple hundred then I might as well get one and hear what it's all about. I might save myself some money if it really is as good as most of these people claim. I just don't like the fact that it is by some ghetto ass company that I never heard of derived from a company that bites off other mic products. We'll see...

Im sorry I havent gotten those yet, I have been practicing daily with my wife, who is a great singer and is letting me know when I am off pitch. I do need to get some instructional books though. And I have the ones you recommended on file. How long is too long, cause I have been working on a song tonight for about (believe it or not) six hours. Im finally singing on key, but i feel to tired to carry on. I practiced so long that for this song, the pitch corrector is not really being needed!

I just was in a store yesterday, feeling totally self-conscious while A/B'ing a NT1 against a Apex 420. I wish they had a booth, but there I was in the middle of the sales floor trying to sing a few bars. The NT1 was so hot it was disgusting. I had to turn the gain way down, and still had the background music bleeding through at 180degrees. It sounded warm, but the noise was huge, it was very sibilant, and felt like I could crush it in my hand.

I wish someone up here carried the C1, but I'll get one soon enough. I bought the 420 to tie me over. So far just vocals, and it worked great. Now I'm curious about throwing it on my Marshall in omni pattern.

I wasn't impressed by the NT1 at all when I A/B'ed it with the NT2... it just seemed so "dead," for lack of a better adjective.
I have yet to try the C1....and I can't wait!

I have an NT1. For the dough it's a great sounding mic. If you're looking for warmth, you might wanna try a warmer preamp. Presonus makes the BLUETUBE preamp. It's a mic preamp with tubes. It's pretty inexpensive. It goes for about $170.00 U.S. It also has some nice features for warming up guitars. Good luck.

Thanks Alan,

When I called Steve's Music in Toronto, they were actually in the process of evaluating them so hopefully they'll be up and stocked in the next week or so.

Here are a few tunes you can listen to, the first one I used the ROde NT-1 and the second I used the Studio Projects C1. This may give you an idea on how these mics compare in sound.

but its all subjective anyway

Telefucken....what kind of mic pre amp did you use with these tracks? The rode NT1 recording was very good.

Sondriven,

My 2 cents (and that's about what I'm worth) is.... consider a Marshall V-67. I got the gold one from a local Sam Ash, but I brought in a print from the Mars web site and snagged it for $169. I think Sam Ash has them for more than $200.

Now I haven't compared the Marshall to anything other than the cheapie Samson dynamic mic I had been using and a small-diaphram condensor I borrowed from a friend, a Shure SM-81. Naturally the Marshall large-diaphram is much much better for lead vocal.

I bought the V-67 largely on the advice of Harvey Gerst, who tested it at length. I know enough about Harvey to trust his advice, and took the plunge. I'm very happy so far.

This all comes from a recording newbie - been recording for less than a year. But I do think if you do a search on Harvey, the V-67 and the C-1 you'll find a lot of discussion of the relative merits of the two mics.

Good luck!

jvasey,

have you check out Cosmo music in Richmond Hill?
based on my experience, they are more willing to offer a better price comparing to Steve's. :)
