I picked up a brand spankin' new Marshall Valvestate AVT50 last night.

This amp is sweet, and it's exactly what I wanted... great tube tone, simple controls, and sturdy as hell.

50 watts of pure bliss! ;)

The price was redicuously cheap, too! :)

I like the AVT series a lot. Good choice Buck.

It has a direct out with speaker simulation for DI recording. You should give that a try and tell us how that sounds.

Buck!! Congrats on your new toy! I have a few questions, since I am in the market for a new amp.

I stopped by my local MusicMall and Daddy's Junky Music and checked out the Marshall combos they had. I tried out the MG50DFX and the MG100DFX. I really liked both, since they're exactly the same, aside from the wattage and weight difference. What I really wanted to try was some of the AVT's they had.. they had the one you bought, and all the higher models. What I want to know is if you tried out any other Marshall combos, such as the MG50DFX, and how the AVT50 you bought compares to it (tone-wise, etc). Also, how loud does your AVT50 go? Is it a gig-capable amp? The amp I want to buy should be good for practice and recording, but also loud enough for small gigs. I play a lot of punk and rock, so let me know how the AVT's tone complements those genres if you have an idea.

Thanks! :)

I didn't compare the AVT50 to the other models you mentioned.

How loud is it?

Well, I just got it last night and haven't had a chance to crank it up yet.
I'm playing out tomorrow night at a local pub, so I'll have more details on Monday as to how it performs.

Tone-wise, I LOVE the AVT50!
It has such a warm, sweet sound that compares with the Mesa Boogie Nomad series... at half the cost.

There's no amp-modeling on this amp, it's just got two channels of excellent, top-notch sound.
I've got a POD that I can run through the amp if I want modeling, but I doubt if I'll even bother.

The AVT50 sounds great all by itself. :):):):)

Congrats Buck,

Don't forget to plug a pair of Koss phones into that puppy (For best results)!

cool. I picked up an AVT50 head and half stack a few weeks ago and it's very smooth. You would need a pedal for modern distortion but the clean and grungy sounds are great.

if that's the case, i will probably stick with the MG100DFX.. it's not a problem having the pedal, because i do have one (boss metal zone mt-2), but i just want an amp that give me more modern distortion than a vintage tube amp.

arjun , correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the AVT's would indeed have an almost modern distortion sound, because they're solid state, not tube, in their basic make up......

I haven't been able to play around with one, but I've heard great things about them besides Buck62's report.....

Here's a link about the distortion.....gibs

sorry gibs, my bad. i'm confusing what valve and solid state amps are... where does tube, valve, and solid all fit in? could you explain which are what? after reading the link you provided i understand that the AVT's are semi-tube? which makes them valves? hmm.. yes but i do now understand that these AVT's are good for my desired sound. i will probably go back to the store and try these models out too. but for now, i'm confused about tube/valvestate/solidstate..

thanks gibs

The preamp is tube but the power is solid state. The distortion is definately more of a vintage fuzz then a Mesa Boogie type brown tone.

congrads on the purchase. I've been meaning to try the AVT series. The Valvestate series sucked. I got better Marshall tones out of my sansamp and a roland JC120 than my buddy did with his Valvestate...

One of the things I don't get is that most of the hybrid amps use tube pre-amps with solid state power amps, whereas a tube power amp is where you really hear the typical Marshall's character. My Artist 3203 uses a tube power amp with a hybrid pre-amp.. the pre-amp has a 12ax7, but uses a solid state section for the distortion. Cost wise, I spent about as much as these AVT's are going for and still get classic Marshall tone. Mine is crapping out and I need to find a replacement. So can someone throw up some AVT samples vs. a POD and a full tube Marshall?

JR- I dont have anything I can post with it yet but I tried all sorts of combinations on my POD and even tried it in the effects loop and before the AVT Pre. I won't let the pod anywhere near my guitar anymore. Just putting it in the signal path sucked the life out of the tone from my LP Studio.

The disadvantage to a full tube is obviously that you need to crank them up to get the tone going. A power break seems pretty neccesary for recording them.

Hey Buck62 congrats on the new amp!

Did you get the combo amp or a head & cabinet?

I've been playing through a Fender Princeton Chorus for many years now, but I've always dreamed of owning a Marshal 1/2 stack.

I checked out the AVT's on the Marshall page and from what I hear they kick ass. The cost of a AVT50 head & cabinet is about double that of the AVT50 combo. Did you try out both the head and the combo amp? I'm looking for a full, deep, meaty rock sound. Basically a "classic" rock sound since that is what I grew up on - VanHalen, Aerosmith, KISS, Ted Nugent, etc.

Texroadkill talks about the AVT50H & caninet being really smooth with good cleans & distortion. Does anybody know how the sound of the combo compared to the head & cabinet might be?

I haven't played through the seperate head/cabinet amp.

I bought the AVT50 combo.

I LOVE this amp!!!

It has an awesome meaty tone... probably due to the closed/sealed back.

I could give you detailed descriptions (based on how MY guitar sounds through it) all day long.
But you just have to play through the AVT50 yourself to form your own opinions about this amp.

They're pretty accurate.

Buck, congrats on your new amp. I have the AVT150 and love the heck out of it. I also have marshall and vintage gibson tube amps and they all have there good points. The avt uses 1 ECC83 dual triode valve that is saturated to the hilt when using the overdrive channel thus giving it that warm tube sound. Most of the bad talk about the amp are from guys who have never cranked one up.
Arjun, regarding your decision between the MG series and the AVT line, there is no comparison. The MG is a very low budget intry-level amp. I added the 112 extension cabinet to my 150 and it drives hard. At times I will connect a ABY box and run another combo. I agree with Tex regarding the POD. It just didn't fit my needs, although there are POD owners who swear by them...I guess. You will not be disappointed in choosing an AVT series amp. Good luck.

OK Buck62, you should go into advertizing for Marshall. I picked up an AVT50 on my way home yesterday!

I've been thinning the forest on my father-in-law's land to earn some extra $ (actually getting some use out of my Forestry degree). He hasn't paid me yet, but I could start to feel that dough burning a hole in my pocket, and after reading your posts and other reviews scattered around the net - I just had to have one. I've been wanting a Marshall for about, uhmm, 25 years!

Time to sell the Fender Princeton Chorus. Been a great amp and its in excellent shape.

AVT50 sounds great - love the distortion with my Les Paul and the clean sounds excellent with my Strat. I only had a couple hours last night to make a home for it in my studio and play around with it. I was mostly twisting knobs and adjusting settings on my multi-fx pedal. What settings have you found that you like for distortion and clean channels?

Hey, thanks for your posts. I can't wait to get home and sneak down stairs and get my ears ringing!! What?!?!

I really like the clean channel with the tube gain cranked up. It has a great dirty, vintage sound.
