...
has anyone heard about this or maybe tried it out? it sounds really really cool:

The date of the USAToday article is 2003, so I can imagine there have been advancements since then. I was reading that these speakers can be purchased for around $600 but are only available for professional commercial use, not consumer.

It may even change the way engineers mix, maybe?
only issue might be the speakers frequency response which seems to loose a lot over 10K

please fix it for me...

I saw that on 'Tomorrows World' (old BBC Program) years ago!!!

I thought it had been forgotten about!

Not sure how well it'll sell but it is rather cool.

Because sound can be sent on a direct beam you could see a club full of people dancin like nutters while listening to there own music choices! I would love to see that... a guy MC Hammering it right next to a Trance head... Please make this dream come true... Joe age 26 1/2

The frequency response makes it pretty useless for mixing music. It could be a cool technology for live monitoring though. You wouldn't have to wear headphones while tracking and in live gigs it could reduce the setup time drastically.

i assume down the road someone might develop a better speaker for the sound, of course. but I'm not sure the frequency response it because of the speaker itself or the way the sound is transmitted through ultrasonic frequencies. If in the future we do use it for recording situations, it may remove the need for an acoutically controlled room.

Sounds useful for live monitoring. For tracking, it seems to me that the musician's head which 'resolves' the hypersonic signal would cause bleed into the microphone.

yeah, see that's what i was wondering too. they're saying that nobody else next to you would be bothered by lisetning to your music in the car or anything...but wouldn't the reflections off your head disperse the sound around the room?

They kept mentioning how if you aimed it at a wall, it would sound like the sound was coming from the wall, so yes, I would think it would have to disperse, albeit at a low level if aimed at a head.
