I really like the groove. It sounds pretty good, the vocals seem to background though, like, they are loud enough, just not up front enough. What does your signal chain look like? Mic, Pre, recording platform, etc.?

Maybe the vocal effect is just too much. The piano/keys sound sounds good to me. I don't hear a bass, the organ is a great touch.

Signal Chain - Behr (cough), uh Beh (hack)... German made large diaphram mic (B1) -> AudioBuddy->Tascam 788->cooledit 2.0. Mixed using crappy speakers and an even crappier PC. I'm gonna' upgrade my whole setup after Christmas.

SP C1, vtb-1 or RNP, RNC, aardvark q10, HomeBuilt PC, Cubase and some good monitors. Can't wait !!!

Thanks for the replies. I'm gonna' remix the whole thing when I get some decent monitors. I'm tired of running back and forth to my car checking out the mix.

Thanks
Dennis

Great tune, but I had the same comments listed above, wanted to hear more of a thumping bass beat, also less reverb on the voice. Maybe a bit more volume and backgroud harmony during the chorus also.

Nice tune.....Is that a flange on your voice? I'd like to hear the vocal sound more natural. I can hear through the effects that you have a nice voice though. BUT, I know what you mean about Berh...Beh... I have a B2. My first condensor. I too am thinking of going SP C1...as soon as possible. I use the VTB-1...pair actually. I like them a lot...the RNC is nice too. The mic has gotta go!

Anyway, very cool vibe to this one. I would recommend retracking the vocals once you get a better mic. You have a very good voice and it just needs to sound more human in the recording.

Look forward to more from you!

Hi Dennis,welcome!

I really dug your groove, the songwriting was just great.
Everything sounded good except for the effects on the vox, chorus?

Sounds like you have fine voice, why don't you retrack it,or remix it without the effects.
I'd like to hear it.

How old are you, you'd be suprised how many old fart's there are around here!
Me included!:D

Enjoyed it,thanks,
Pete

I really like the "filter" the drums sound like they're going thru, esp. the snare... sounds like you're playing it thru a drinking straw :)

Vocals aren't too bad... the feel, and changes are excellent.. the piano... the low piano... sounds awesome...

The mix could be a bit fuller; as it is, this would be a good way (the way it's mixed NOW) to segue into a FULL mix...

...the bass would come up, the "straw" would leave, the cymbals would come into play... the vox would come up a bit, and the vocal FX would be cleaner... that would be a KILLER dynamic, if you could pull it off...

...as you said, your set up is limiting you now... but at least the tooons sound good musically right now... :)

I like this a lot, actually... a crazy idea would be to have someone like Crawdad take this toon and record it his way, and see what happened...

members covering other members toons? mixmkr's done it... why not? :D BTW not trying to obligate crawdaddy-o ;)

Shutting up before I volunteer everybody,

Chad

Welcome to the board man. We've got an entire group of geezers lurking aroung here and I'm old enough for two of 'em. :O

Cool song, good vibe to it, I pretty much echo everyone else's comments. Especially about the lack of bass and kick. The FX on the voice didn't really bother me though. If that were the only way you ever did your voice it'd get old but as a effect on one song it sounds interesting.

Nice playing and singing, I look forward to hearing more stuff from you.

LOL Chad. Crawdad would sound good doing this tune! Not that rustyfingers doesn't already, just lacking the gear. I'm downloading your tune right now with every intention of covering it and I don't even know what it sounds like yet! :)

I too really like the sound of this musically. Nice Piano. Nice singing. Just feels real nice to listen to. Now go piss off your wife and spend a couple grand on some gear and pay more attention to your music........before you get so old that you die.

Come to think of it, you might want to just go step by step. Start with the mic and some monitors? Might be all that you really need in the end?

Thanks for posting....hope you don't take my comments too literally....i don't think your gonna die....

Hello everyone and thanks for all the good comments and suggestions. I wrote, recorded and mixed this song in one sitting. That was the 10th vocal take and my voice was getting pretty tired. I'm redoing the drum track and adding some bass lines to make it a little fuller but it's kinda slow go right now. I record in my wifes dinning room so recording time is limited. She and the kids are going out of town this weekend so I'm gonna work on this one and a couple more while they are gone. Hopefully I'll get finished before they return Sunday afternoon.

PS Don't plan on dying anytime in the near future but you never know, life is pretty fragile and it can be taken away in the wink of an eye... Maybe I'll make it till Monday so I can upload the remix :)

Thanks again
Dennis

PSS Had a good friend of mine die at 32 from a heart attack a few years ago. He and his wife were putting down floor tile in the kitchen. His wife went to the bathroom and when she returned he was dead. His name was Mike and he was a good man...

Oh Yea.. I don't have to spend a couple of grand to piss off my wife. Drinking all the tea or forgetting to take out the garbage is pretty much all it takes. Spending a couple of grand on gear??? She would probably hire a hit man.

Damn Rusty, I typed a hell of a reponse and review but somehow it didn't post. Now I'm all tuckered out. Vocal does sound like it's coming through a soda straw:D I don't know if it's all the mic though, it could be an artifact of the mp3 encoding. Also it needs bass. I like the tune though.

...Hey Rusty,
....cool stuff from a fellow 788 user. Nice song man..... Are you intending to put some backing vocs in there? ...I think that would do a bunch for the dynamics of the song. Nice work.

another 788 user here..

cool tune.. I agree some backups would add a lot to this..

everything seems to sound too close to the center... maybe could use some spread or something..

nice sounds though..

Hey Dennis,

I'm also feeling the flange on the voice. Interesting. I'm excited for all your big purchases though. It sounds like AM radio. Like it was really well produced but I'm listening on a boombox. The drums are the guilty party to my ears.

I also like the arrangement. You've got a good rhythmic hook with the 1 - 2 beat on the piano and the kick-snare. Reminds me of the bruce hornsby hit, "the way it is." Hope that's not an insult. I dig that tune too....

finally, I agree with Sabbath about the mix being very centrally focused. no spread to it. maybe that's where I got the boombox imagery in my head.

Nice. I'm gonna listen to it agin..:D

hey Dennis, good tune. I too, was looking for a thumping bass. But it's a great tune. Do more please.
