Ha, this is just going to fuel the fire for everybody around here that thinks the pros have "secrets" that they don't want to share with anybody.

Top mastering engineers use clipping as a means of getting a loud sound on vinyl or CD, in conjunction with a number of other 'voodoo' arts.
Now it's time for the spoooooky EQoooooo...

Two things really make or break a tune for me. Square waves and more cowbell.

The stupidest thing stated in this "article" is:

"In reality, when you see a red light on your pro equipment, it means that your recording is clipped - the very top of the waveform is sheared off producing some distortion."

LOL

This might be true for a converter. But, on almost all gear with a "clip" light, it is set to light up at either -4 or -6dB before clipping.

Also, you can technically clip a signal, but if it is short lived, your ears may not detect it.

You can also mask clipping somewhat by filtering out lower frequencies.

Man, I thought all signals should be recorded in the red. This really set me straight.

Thank god there are people out there posting that nonsense. More work for the people that actually *think*

A little bit of 'clipping' on my desk (a Soundcraft 6000) can sound quite good on certain sources. And it does at least advise to use your ears and extreme caution, and moreover to make a clean mix as well. The article's hardly so bad as to render me speechless.

Anyway, flame away, if you feel so inclined.

How do you know that you are "clipping" on your desk?

you make a valid point. Call Bruce Dickenson!

He's just like me, he puts his pants on one leg at a time.

Now I know I have a shot at being a legendary record producer!

Yes, but once his pants are on, he makes gold records.

I wonder how much his pants would go for on Ebay, then maybe I can make a few gold records. :D
