HRC4 Revisited/ Crawdad and SluiCe

Going from memory, I like this version better than the first. The guitar seems to be more "part of the band" and the whole thing has a bit more of a raw feeling.

Kick is pretty quiet to my ears (on my soso speakers) through most of the mix and there seems to be enough room for a bit more.

This pretty much has pro written all over it guys. Love the vocal delivery. Big bold and in the pocket.

A few more responses....

Fmmahoganyrush--Regarding those drums, I DID want to put more time into them, but all the ideas I heard were really intricate. That stuff can take days just to get it all right and I didn't have days at the time--merely hours! Those funk guys seem deceptively simple, but the GROOVES are anything but!

SluiCe--You came through big time on this and I am really appreciative, believe me. I too feel like I have made a friend. Now that you mention it, almost all my friendships started around music endeavors. Five big trout for you! Which brings up the question--what do I get? Crayfish or what? :D

Fprod south--Thanks for coming back a second time and for the nice comments!

volthause--Likewise! Thank you!

Guernica--hey bro! I had the verse and chorus ideas and Tom wrote the breakdown section, which I think is so cool. It reminds me of Band of Gypsies in that part. As always, good to see ya hanging out here!

Pedullist--That new avatar is freaky! Yeah, that harmony KILLS! Thanks for returning for the remix!

Skids--I like this version better too--cool mix from da troutman! I'm glad he brought that little wah wah noodle up. Its just for texture and rhythm, but I like those kinds of little things. Thanks for the kudos on the tune as well. Give me about ten years of practice and maybe I can cut a real drum track for this. Oh wait--I need a real studio too...and a bigger board...and more mics...and soundproofing....hey. honey...do you mind if I spend our life savings on some more RECORDIN GEAR?!!:D

Participant--Gotcha! And you are absolutely right. besides, a party of one is boring as hell. Now, about those trout....

Khompewtur--well, I just commented on everything you said so I won't go over it again--but I agree on all points and want to say thank for returning for another listen!

Kjam22--Thank you as well for listening. That other tune was just up for Jag. he hasn't even heard it yet, so it might change completely, but thanks for listening!

Well done!

Good mix, and tasty soloing. I have to say though it's missing a bit of the "fire" that the first version had. Diggin' that bendy stuff: shades of Jerry Cantrell.

Do I detect a bit of high-end distortion in there still? Maybe it's the MP3. Nice dynamics! I like it when my meters fluctuate more than 3 bars.;)

I like both versions.:D

Oh yeah

This is some great stuff! The regeneration on the vocals is brilliant. Instruments are clean and clear, vocals are outstanding.

Kick ass guitar, Bass is awesome, drums are just right!

It doesn't get much tighter than this.

Did like it. Its about 95% there.

The hit hat is not played the way I would have liked to have heard it, i.e. driving the beat with 16ths. Just a little more subtle drive somewhere.

Also the bass is too laid back for me. Needs to create a more subtle drive with double notes instead of play and stop.

Would also like to have heard a B3 or more tinkling of the ivory.

Guitar solos a little too upfront.

More a matter of my style than this being weird so take it with a grain of salt.

That would be my only nitpick..and it aint much :) . But damn fine playing Tom! you too crawdad! Who wrote this? I'm to lazy to go back and read damnit!:D . It's a fine tune and you two guy's Rock hard together. Al I know you get tired of hearing this but...I LOVE YOUR VOCAL WORK!!:D :D Great stuff*****

I'd say 85% personally, but one must choose their battles. We can hear everything, including the lyrics, which IMO are the most important part of this song. Therefore, my work on this is done, but I look forward to the Crawdad only version!

I really loved the first one, but now it nearly pales in comparison. This one is really tight, and is better organized. You've surprised me again by improving this one to near perfection.

Twist

It sounds alot more polished... The vocal additions are excellent...

The new guitar is great, kinda reminds me of Roy Buchanon, the string bends that waver like... very tasty...

Although, I loved all the older guitar leads, they had a wild, raw energy to em...

Excellent job guys!!

:)

Well my wife listened to both versions (yes I have the Steve Vai guitar version :D taking orders now!) and she immediately said the second one was a better mix and it is......much clearer. And the added vocals are simply GREAT ! (best Tony the tiger voice)
A good song.......from New York to Jerusalem. That ought to be the name BTW

very cool.. this mix *might* be better, I say might be because the only thing I know that is better about it is the clipping has been fixed.. the guitar leads in the first version definitely were better, or at least more technical.... I still think the lead guitar tone is a bit too heavy for this.. also a hair loud in spots.. I saved the first version..

great playing and singing.. again, excellent tune.. Tom, your probably the best guitarist on the board!

Well, for a drum machine and a couple of hours... I have no critisizms then:D . It's just that it's a real good tune, like something I would really listen to and dig. Personal opinion, that's all... ...Hell, if I sounded half that good on my stuff I'd be a happy man!

This was brilliant - loved the electric piano, loved the new set of git leads (I guess that's what makes horse racing - the old ones seemed more like noodling, IMO) loved the harmonies, great great sound. Heard some clipping, maybe an mp3 thing, though. Liked the new wet lead voc too. I got a kick out of the heavier guitar tone - and there really seems to be a genre developing around this particular style (craw, if you listen to WDET, you've probably heard it) - rootsy r&b tinged pop with some heavy shredding in the mix.

Still think the opening lines might be too close to Marvin's melody and feel. Mebbe the only thing keeping you from an indie radio hit here - it's a thin line between derivation and copying. Once you go to that first IV chord, the listener will probably forget about the comparison and treat it like its own song, but those two lines might be enough to make a radio music director say "forget it".

ICB similarities notwithstanding, this is one of the 2 or 3 best things I've heard in the clinic. Excellent, excellent work. You guys are the best!

Actually I agree.......not that we're in the majority :D......but the first version's git parts were more "on fire" for lack of a better term.........they sounded like Tom was just throwing caution to the wind and going for it whereas these sound more restained and reigned-in (which, of course, they are since that was the point).

OTOH......these added vocals and the wah guitar and the much better mix all combine to make this the best over-all regardless of which leads you like better.

Fortunately for me....no less a personage than Sam himself taught me to download everything before it gets deleted so I have them both.........................I'm a collector ya' know. :D

Still a great effort but I prefer the original....it had more of a soulful bluesy feel and I'm partial to the blues (glad I d/l'd it when I had the chance...). I was amazed how the "R&B treatment" made it sound so different

Listened the first one and this one. Simply spectacular. Great song & great playing/recording/mixing. If memory serves, I think the lead parts do groove better in this one IMHO. I loved the Sluiceish BG vocals. Vey nice.

Excellent work guys (duh) :D

forgot to mention the great vocal additions.. nice touch SLuiCe! I wanted more of it..

I knew this would be a sick collab..

Thanks dudes...

Hey anyone mind emailing me a copy of that original version? I think I overwrote the file.

I never actually did compare the two myself. For some reason I never A/B my retakes. I guess I'm always just afraid that the old version will be better.
