i meant fave screamo type band. i dont listen to much of it at all, infact hardly ever. i mostly listen to grindcore and deathmetal but if its good ill take a listen. haha yer i know where your going with the 12 yr old bit but i think its cus the singers a girl that she sounds like a young boy. i was pretty much trying to say that i have listened to screamo so i know that the drumming shouldnt be off tempo. but i do like circle takes the square - track 7 (dno the name but it says "somewhere out there theres a thrill i swear") And you cant bash that recording cause its so lively (if thats the right term) its got alot of energy in it.
You shouldnt bash any music though (as long as its not proper shit) and i doubt you have heard half of their songs but if you dont like them then youre not gunna buy their album ;)

Oh so that's a chick singing, hmm. Well all I heard is a clip someone posted on gearslutz. I'll give them a listen again, I"m not saying I don't like that style of music, I have a screamo band in as I'm typing this and they're pretty good, it's just that the recording I listened to sounded like crap.

screamo drumming done well is some of the most emotive and rhthymic stuff i've ever heard. if anyone is interested, check out bands like kaospilot or orchid.
although what msblaze has directed us to listen to doesn't really sound like screamo =/. i doubt it's supposed to sound like that.

can we just let this thread die haha it was a bad mix period stop talking about it please.

thanx alot, how do you play witha metronome though? i tried an online one and i couldn't get it.
For the most part every "click" is a quater note. So if your playing a tab or somthing that is written out you need to find out the NOTE VALUES first before you know where to place it around the click. In general for rock beats you are going to be dealing with eighth note patterns, so this means the 1st hit will be on the click, 2nd off, 3rd on and so fourth.

I would not recommend using clicks of the internet, because it seems easier to control one that you can just spin a dial.

If you want to learn how to play to a click 1) you need to be able to hear it clearly 2) you need to understand where the click need to be 3) you just gotta keep at it because its not easy, and your not going to learn overnight.

I would suggest starting a very simple 8th note rock beat at a very slow tempo say 72-80, and spend a little more time on it every day, because all it takes is work. Also I suggest that you listen to the click for a few minutes before you start to play, just to get the feel of the speed you are playing at and where the subdivisions are.

Keep up the drumming

lol, just as a suggestion... get a metronome if you dont have one, and if you do, use it.
i know you say you play "screamo", but that shouldnt be a reason for it being out of time.

The drums sounded ok i guess, it wasnt horrrrrrrrible but could be better.

edit: ooh, i guess some1 already mentioned the metronome...

yeh thanx, screamo is half beats someone said or somthing, so its harder to understand... for me, and yeh i will be buying a metronome when i get the money, but there are priorities, like bills , food , house , haha

Isolation headphones range from $100 up but are well worth it, makes it easy to hear a click.

Yup. They are also great for feeding a monitor mix on stage if you don't mind them.

i really could trash you for that sentence, but i wont.
well, no drumming is the "same" in every genre, at least it shouldnt be, but in most of the modern rock songs, the snare is played on the 2 and the 4, with lots of other music like metal and punk, and that sort of stuff, a lot of drummers play in double time, which is playing the snare on 1+,2+,3+ and 4+, so yea, it seems like its 2 times faster (depends how you think of it, you could argue that it is at a tempo 2 tiems faster, or just playing the notes at a faster duration, with the latter being IMO more correct). There are other variations, so you can play the snare on 1,2,3, and 4.

here are some tabs to hlep you unerstand it better, hopefully you can read tabs, its not too hard

most rock:
--|1+2+3+4+|
Sn|--o---o-|

a lotta metal and punk:
--|1+2+3+4+|
Sn|-o-o-o-o|

that simple variation i was talking about
--|1+2+3+4+|
Sn|o-o-o-o-|

this is just realllllll basic stuff, maybe you knew it, maybe not, whatever, im jsut bored

thanx alot man, i've only been playing 3 months anyway... and that definetly is dicouraging to hear "your playing sucks" ect... i would rather have constuctive critisism then just bashing my work..

yeah everyone leave the poor dude alone, hes living the dream, who decides what bad is anyway?

I taught myself to play by listening/watching/playing along with grunge rock (oh where has that gone?). Get some music videos and watch what the drummers are doing. Then emulate that, and that will give you a good basis to work from. From there, you can expand and start adding your own feel to it. I would be surprised if you find yourself still playing punk/emo in about 5 years.

That's pretty good for 3 months. Keep playing.

I agree that for 3 months of playing, it's really not too bad and we shouldn't discourage him. I feel he has a LOT of potential!!

I have to tell you, though, that statements like this

are just ridiculous!

Do you know who decides? YOU DO!

I do!!, ...everyone does!!! If something is inferior to your ear...It's bad!! That's your opinion and you are allowed it!

And the word bad is not just subjective anyway! If we all first picked up the sticks and immediately played as good as any of the greats, no one would be bad.

The truth of it is, when we ALL start out, WE'RE ALL BAD!!!!

That's why the word BETTER was invented!! It means you're not as bad as you were a little while ago!

Keep it up! I don't even remember how good I was at 3 months, it was that long ago!

Just remember, solid tempo is more important and useful than flash!!!!!
