How's my first drum mix?

I don't mean to be a prick, but honostly the whole emo/screamo/crap/sheep thing your into kind of makes me a bigger prick, sorry.

I'm 43 years old and while I'm really not into the whole screamo music thing I am NOT going to discourage a fellow musician from doing HIS thing. He does have somethings to learn, but that's what he's here for. The last thing he needs to hear is his music sucks and his playing sucks. Try to point things out and help him don't criticize him for it.....Oh by the way I don't think it's the music that makes you a prick.....that's like saying Ozzy Osbourne is responsible for people's suicides....get a grip you're just a prick
 
If I were you, I would seriously invest in a set of headphones and something to play a click track. You need to work on tempo. Don't argue and give me the excuse about punk/screamo/emo whatever style of music you play and "not jazz band"!

EVERY type of music is defined by the ability to keep a tempo and pulse. Point blank: I didn't hear one. Even of it's a free-form solo, there are sections where you break into some sort of beat, but the tempo is all over the place. You will never sound professional until you get the beat down, it doesn't matter what mikes you use or how you record. You need control, my son!

I think with a little "wood-shedding" you'd be very happy with your playing.

i agree with tempo, i can keep one just not with that type of playing, i need to work on faster paced tempos'

thanx alot man, i've only been playing 3 months anyway... and that definetly is dicouraging to hear "your playing sucks" ect... i would rather have constuctive critisism then just bashing my work..

Start the tempos off slow, until you get it clean then speed it up. You will be able to build speed faster that way and have better control. The metronome should be your best friend.

Buy isolation headphones, and plug them into your mixer(if it has a headphone jack, computer's jack if not). Put the metronome in one of the inputs, and whatever mics you have on your drum in the other inputs. Then mix the sound so you can hear the click just over your snare drum. Do this BEFORE you invest in more mics. Isolation headphones range from $100 up but are well worth it, makes it easy to hear a click.

And later one if you want a good overhead I would suggest the Rode NT-4 dual overhead sounds great (expensive, but this way you only need one).

you will be able to d/l differnt tempos off the internet as a click track and you can just put it on to cd/i pod etc.. and just listen to it like that. look on google.
 
If you are recording on your p.c your software probably has metronome on it.

yer but i was thinking for practise so he can practise playing in time cause at the moment its all off time. and i know what screamo is one of my fave bands is circle takes the square and no music should be off tempo they are just playing half beats etc.. If you wanted a metranome so you can practise on a pad then look on ebay for the buy it nows. there are allways cheap ones. Good luck with your band!

Are you serious. That band sounds like a bunch of crazy 12 year olds. There's actually a thread over in the moan zone on gearslutz.com talking about how terrible that band is. PS If you likee Circle takes the square then look for Breedlove on myspace.

here is a cheap one with a jack(that need to plug into the mixer)http://www.interstatemusic.com/weba...01&storeId=10051&productId=40113845&langId=-1
buy an adapter from radio shack from 1/8" to1/4" (if your inputs on your mixer are 1/4") and turn the gain nob on your mixer up, than you can mix it with your drums like I said before.

You can also use gun mufflers w/ small earphone pieces that come w/ walkmen cd players, but thats kinda uncomfortable so the vic firth stereo's would probably be your best bet. thanx alot, how do you play witha metronome though? i tried an online one and i couldn't get it.

Yes but what I'm saying is Screamo can be recorded without sounding like garbage and circle takes the square sounds like garbage.

i meant fave screamo type band. i dont listen to much of it at all, infact hardly ever. i mostly listen to grindcore and deathmetal but if its good ill take a listen. haha yer i know where your going with the 12 yr old bit but i think its cus the singers a girl that she sounds like a young boy. i was pretty much trying to say that i have listened to screamo so i know that the drumming shouldnt be off tempo. but i do like circle takes the square - track 7 (dno the name but it says "somewhere out there theres a thrill i swear") And you cant bash that recording cause its so lively (if thats the right term) its got alot of energy in it.
You shouldnt bash any music though (as long as its not proper shit) and i doubt you have heard half of their songs but if you dont like them then youre not gunna buy their album ;)

i did mean the circle takes the square recording cause he was slagging all their recordings off (most are shit but track 7 is good) but i like the livelyness in your "bad old solo" i think its called. specialy the snare. :)
