I also have Ableton Live and the documentation is not very helpful at answering basic questions like this. It's a pdf on the CD, which can be a pain in the ass on its own. 
So I understand why Erion had to ask such a basic question. And "making beats" is programming samples and loops, which you can only effectively do in Ableton with MIDI. Didn't mean to piss off anyone, sorry, but the question made sense to me (being a relative newbie myself).
