amazing...last night i was driving home thinking I was going to post this exact thread....heh. "how do you pronounce neumann?". answered my question...

the way i was thinking about it...the german pronunciation is definately right...but, i guess we do have a tendancy to put an english spin on lots of words. meh.

This is the dumbest thing (about the Neumann-pronounciation) I've ever heard!
You know I was joking, right? HEY EVERYONE! I WAS JOKING ABOUT THE "NEW MAINE" THING! My sense of humor doesn't work well in cyberspace.

Cool. Say hi to him for me. He recorded a song for my band a few years ago at some studio in Dallas, or maybe Denton. The band was Hydrovibe (I've since moved on). He was great - lots of patience and a bit of a perfectionist (definitely a good thing). He suffered through my numerous drum takes, so he gets an A in my book, plus that song was the best sounding sound we ever recorded, IMO.
Alex was the main engineer at Nomad Recording Studio in Carrollton for several years, so that's probably where you guys recorded. He'll be here this evening, so I'll pass your greetings along. He just won another "Producer Of The Year" award for his work on the new "Slow Roosevelt" album, which is the first album recorded in our new studio.

Hey, I knew it was a joke!
I still say newman, I don't care if its wrong. Saying Noy-man, makes me sound like a yankee trying to pronounce Norman.
(Now watch me get flamed by the New-Englanders!)

Yeah, I knew, but since this happens to me all the time in the Dragon Cave, I thought "Let someone else feel my 'agony' :D

Since I made some 'jokes' about women and anal sex, a lot of people think I'm some immature little sexist wanker...
I have news for you, Riley and others! "I'm NOT!" :cool:

But, anyway, back to topic: Go for "Noy-mahn!"

"As we've well established, being a German "familienname", the proper pronunciation would be "Noy-mann". Still, as someone alluded to earlier, using that pronunciation in the U.S. will earn you nothing but blank stares, even in much of the audio community. When in Rome...

I think I'll stick with "NEW-MAN" pronunciation...

I've had a similar experience with one of my favorite beers. It's a belgian white ale called HOEGAARDEN. A belgian friend of mine tells me the proper pronunciation is "hoo-hart-en" with a flegmy "cch" on the "hart".

Try to order it the right way and you get a blank stare from the bartender! It's hoe-garden to them. Which may actually be a correct translation to english!

How do you say 'Gyros' when ordering this at a Greek resturant? I've actaully heard people say 'Jie-rows', and could help but laugh at them. Another one I've heard is 'Au Jus', and somebody pronounced it 'Aw-Juice'. :)

"Noy-min" is how it's pronounced.

Although, that would also work for the name "Norman" if he was from New Jersey. Like this....

"My cousin Noy-min from "Joy-zee" :D

Gyros are pronounced "Yu-dos" with a slight roll on the "d".

One of my first jobs was at a Greek restaurant, making gyros.
My boss would've fired me if I said "jie-rows". ;)

Rofl!
You forgot yad for yard, and arn for iron. My mom's from Mass, and although she hasn't lived there for more years than I am old, sometimes, that accent slips through!

Look at it this way...

Deutch=Doytch
Neutrik=Noy-trick
Neumann=Noy-mann

Once again I'm too late... :(

Me too.
I'm half Danish. Kjær is a pretty common last name in Denmark, and the closest way to write down the Danish pronunciation is "care". But if I were you guys, I'd stick to whatever makes people understand wtf you are talking about.

Now is this the stupidest thread ever?

:D :D :D
