for now i'm going to get a OctoPre so i'll have 16 channels going into my MOTU. should be sweet!

BUT, don't bother with the mixer until you get more room. It won't do much good until you can isolate the instruments more.
Personally I feel a mixer is more useful than racks of preamps but maybe I'm just being too old school. You can find Soundcrafts and A&H 24 channel mixers for about 1000 bucks if you get an old enough model. My 24x8 only cost me 960 bucks.
The mixers that sound like liquid gold are completely overkill for your setup and probably cost as much as your house.
