How Use My PC to record?

Please help me how to use my PC to record music from instruments and microphone... Do I need a special Soundcard with Line IN? what kind of soundcard should I buy? Is this possible? So that I can record it as a file as mp3 or wav file and burn later to my cdr. Please help me any one. Thanks!
