Good article. Thanks for posting it. I am of the opinion that these major music conglomerates are not good for the music itself. I also think that MTV is not a good influence on music. Now everyything is so visually oriented. An old fat guy with a killer voice will never get a deal now. I would love to here it though. I think that is pretty apprent in some of the talent that is here on the BBS. There are some folk's music here that I can sit and listen to all day and IMO it's everybit as good if not better music than most of what's out there. I know they can't compete with the major studios as far as recording quality, but some folks come aweful close. I'll take good music over good production anyday (well to an extent :p :D)

I can only hope that the internet can give a good venue for unsigned and undersigned artists to make even a comfortable living doing their music. I really have yet to see a really good vehicle for that to develop where there is tracking of plays (like radio) and sales so the artists and writers can make at least some modest money from thier creations (maybe there is and I just don't know about it). Plus, IMVHO, piracy of digital music will not help this endevor. I think if something like this were to come along, piracy would hurt the small acts/labels/songwriters a lot worse than the big ones. But that's a whole other can of worms ;) :D

Yeah...but he looked pretty young to me ;) :p :D

This is meant as a legitimate question...what is he doing with hs new found success? Is it working out for him? I really have no idea as I am not following it...didn't watch the show. I know enough about it to know that it isn't the style of music that I typically listen too. That's why I have no idea.

I just think back to the old Star Search days and just because one was "discovered" there did not mean there was large market success. I think of two singers that one that contest, Sam Harris & Durell Coleman. They both had great voices, but they certainly are not household names. I think Sam is doing a lot on Broadway and Durell is still gigging around somewhere (I actually bought his album on vinyl way back when). I'm not saying they aren't successful, because obviously, they are still working in the biz (which is more than I can say ;) :D). They just never made it "big time" IMHO. Then of course there was Sawyer Brown (and others I'm sure) who did make it big time. That was just kind of the frame for my question. :).

On the other hand...Buddy Jewel (now we are in my genre) won the Nashville Star contest. He's been a demo singer her in Nashville for quite a few years and is a pretty good songwriter. He's making a bit of a splash now and he's no spring chicken and a bit on the pudge side if I remember corrrectly. Hell...maybe I ought to enter the contest :D Maybe there is hope for me yet :D

PS... I'm old (40) and pudgy too (although I just started diet & workouts today because I may have a fairly high profile, for me anyway, gig on December 14):D
