how to work v67g

I've got an ART tube mp preamp hooked up to emu 0404, when I connect a radio shack mic it works (I can hear myself), but when I attach the v67g I get no signal.

yah, phantom switch is pressed. there's a 'phase reverse' button, do I need to press this?

No the phase reverse would have nothing to do w/ it.... Is the Rad Shack a dynamic mic? It's pssible that either the mic or phantom power is bad. Are you using the same cable??? (Just to eliminate the obvious)

Other than that... try swapping gear if you have access to other condensor mics or preamps....

yah the radioshacks a dynamic mic. yah the exact same cable, everything. all i do is take the plug out of the radioshack and put it into the v67g. Unfortunately these are the only 2 mics I have When i press the phantom power button with the dynamic radshack, there's a high volume distortion for a second and then it goes back to sounding normal, When I press it with the v67g hooked up, same thing. except there's still not sound

The dynamic does not want or need phantom power... sounds like bad phantom pwr, or a bad mic. Have any friends you can swap gear w/ for testing????

no friends with any gear either, all I have is a radio shack and best buy near me. do they sell anything I can use for testing (then I'll return it). I bought both from ebay and it's been like a week since I didn't open them so I don't want to wait longer (I live in a dorm and I don't have a car so those are the only electronics stores w/in walking distance) btw thanks a lot for your help

Dumb question probably, but are you using a XLR to XLR cable? A TS 1/4 mono to XLR would work with a Dynamic but not work with the Condensor.
Hard to tell if Phantom is working by this, but for what it's worth, when you flip phantom on w/ a dynamic, it will make a god awful noise momentarily and then go back to working normally.
Radio Shack and Best Buy prolly won't have anything with phantom power on it. What school are you at, is there a broadcast or recording program? I bet you could pull a random person aside by the school's studio and get them to try out the mic for you.

sorry I don't know what TS 1/4 mono is (I know what XLR looks like). So I plug in the XLR into the mic and the other end has a 1/4" which I plug into preamp.

and that's exactly what happens as you described with dynamic when phantom turned on. BTW, it sounds like phantom isn't good for dynamic? so I shouldn't turn it on when the dynamics connected?

Okay, maybe we're getting somewhere. The is the 1/4" plug mono(TS) or 1/4" stereo(TRS)? I.E. Does it have a tip conductor, then a insulation/gap, another ring conductor, another gap/insulation, and a third sleeve conductor that runs the rest of the shaft of the plug...(TRS or Tip Ring Sleeve), or does it only have a tip conductor, gap, and sleeve? (Tip Sleeve or TS). Dunno if the below illustration helps

If you have the TS version, you'll need to get another cable, try to get one with XLR on both ends (I'm pretty sure the ART accepts that). Otherwise at least get a XLR to TRS cable. Radio Shack should have these.

EDIT, and I wouldn't worry about phantom power with dynamics, it'll only damage some older ribbon mics. Otherwise most dynamic mics just ignore it.

You do need XLR-XLR. Phantom power doesn't go over jack leads because it would explode as you plugged it in (perhaps).

Phantom power won't damage a proper dynamic, however it might be very bad news for that Radio Shack mic ... don't take any chances!!

That's true...forgot it was radio shack. Better safe than sorry. And also reminds me that you should ALWAYS turn phantom power off when connecting or disconnecting mics, I even go as far as to let it sit for 30 seconds, just to let the capacitors discharge.

As I understand it, 99% of the time it won't make a difference, but if you happen to pull the cable out in just the right way it has the potential to really F your equipment up.

radio shack: 1' shielded instrument cord

Do I need to switch this cable too?

ssman... no, that instrument cable should work ok... but, do you understand that you need an XLR to XLR mic cable?

Yes that instrument cable will work.

You really should be using balanced TRS 1/4" cables, like these

Notice the extra ring on the plug? I won't get into the details (search balanced versus unbalanced cables if interested), but your sound quality and amount of noise will be better with these.
