how to use a condensor

Hi there. I ma still having trouble with my new condesor mic. I have never used one before and simply dont know were to place it. Are there any threads I can be directed too.

I am recording accoustic guitar and voice.

The mic has a front and back and I currently have it hanging from the bed. I then have its front pointing at the hole of the guitar.

When I sing into it I sing right into the front. I am not sure If I am doind this right because it sound funny. Almost phased at times.

Any advice would be great, anybody.

Hi Erland,
I've just owned one condenser mic and for vocals I usually place it so that my mouth is aiming for the top of the mic, about 6 to 8 inches. I kind of sing so it skims the top of it.
For acoustic, its kind of tricky. I usually start with the mic above the 12th fret , so its about 6 to 8 inches above it (above the low e string). Then I play it and move it around until I get the sound I want, its different for me if I'm strumming or picking, using a pick or fingers, so I just look for the right position that will give me warmth and not too much finger noise or pick noise.
I hope this helps a little. I'm sure there will be more ideas after this one, as I think everyone has there different approaches to placement. I think its different for everyone, since we all sing and play a little different.

hello, Erland:

The general rules of thumb is to "not" aim directly at the hole for acoustic guitar because it usually sounds boomy. A common way is to keep it 5-8 inches away from the 12th fret, and aim it towards the hole, but slightly off. Then adjust acordingly.

Vocal wise, pretty much the same method, place the mic so the diaphram is about your nose level, aim it slightly towards your mouth to prevent pop's. A pop filter will come in handy, too.

I normally apply low cut filter on these 2 also. Around 80-100hz

just what I wanted to hear, thanks for that Bobbo. You too A1A2, cheers. I dont know what or how to cut low filter at 80-100 means but no worries. I will get the hang of this chunky thing tonight!
