how to transfer large mpeg files from one computer to another

Turn off the Mcafee fire wall (right click on the icon next to your clock)

2. This computer connects to the internet through a residental gateway or through another computer on my network

this is the one you want, then it should appear under my network places

if your still having problems (and your share is set up) try this:

From the run menu (windows key+R) type in CMD, it will bring up the command prompt (looks like a dos window) type in IPCONFIG, it will show your your current IP address (it will probably be 192.168.1.x) mark it down, do the same for the other computer

from an explorer window (or IE), in the address bar type in \\192.168.1.x with x being the IP number of the comp you are trying to connect to so if the target is 192.168.1.101, then type \\192.168.1.101 (make sure the slashes are correct, they are the opposite of the http:// ones)

ok now when i do type in the source computers ip adress i get this message

windows cannot find \\192.168.1.xxx check the spelling and try again, or try searching for the item by clicking the start button and then clicking search

it is a boradband router ..... does this mean i cannot set up a network

a router will network computers so this should work. make sure that the firewall is turned off.

was that the IP address as defined in IPconfig?

Not true. It will depend on which firewall he is running on each machine and how they are configured. If its giving him a warning, then obviously its blocking the request for whatever reason (although the xp firewall should let it go)

MSCE certified here

lol ok, XP firewall is what im talking about....
I did not realize Nick uses a Virus Scanner firewall coz im not, i dont use scanner, just prevention is my only defense.

nick,
try using the PING command from CMD (PING 192.168.1.whatever, the comp u are trying to connect to) to see if it can even see the other machine, if not you still have something blocking it (if it is OK, then it should give you a bunch of times)

Or try the loopback address "PING 127.0.0.1" That will let you know if your TCP/IP stack is loaded and working.

PING statistics for my IP adress

Packets: Sent = 4 recieved = 0 lost = 4

that cannot be good

um, get your friends ipod

If you cant ping the other machine either your router needs to be configured for LAN or one of the machines is misconfigured in one of 5 possible places so you will need somone who is compentent with XP networking to look at it or start googling, there is nothing that can go wrong that hasn't already to happened to a bunch of other ppl who are going to write about it on the internet :D

Getting into a 15 page epic called "Fixing nicks XP network" on HR would probably be uncouth

I think I will do a big ol' file transfer here between these two computers using MS Messenger. Yup, that is what I am gonna do.

Oh dang, I just sent that 50mb file over there in like 3 seconds. Cool!

lol does it send 3.5G??

ok so i installed ms messenger ....direct me

do i need it on both computers?

UB802 said:
Yeah, you need it on both computers. You need two different accounts too. Sign on on both of them, then, click on the tab that says "Send File", accept it on the other computer, and it should send right on over.

Make sure you observe in the Tools/Options where you want file transfers to go. It goes to a default folder that is usually C:\Documents and Settings\your computers name here\My Documents\My Received Files

yeah i got everything working and then when i hit accept it says that i do not have enough disk space which is bull because i have 54G of free space on the drive i assigined it to go to

FFUUUUCCCKKKKKK

ive tried everything

i even sent a different video file that was 913Mb and didnt get any errors

I've said this before, but what you have to do is copy the large file to a DVD or external hard drive, physically carry it to the other machine, and then copy it to a drive on that machine. That's it, end of story. I don't understand why you are torturing yourself over this transfer--just do it the easy way! :D

Any firewire or USB drive will work, as will an iPod with a big enough hard drive. If you don't have an external FW hard drive, get one, you'll find it incredibly useful and the extra storage will always come in handy.

Best of luck!
