How to track...

In some music there is no groove

Groove can be replaced by the word timing. Every music is based on timing, and when musicians have eye-contact while playing nobody is going to tell me timing is worse then when they don't.

(exception, the drummer/bassist combination I told earlier about)

That's pretty much it. The way we do it, is the bass player runs direct into the mixer (no amp, no bleed), the guitar player runs through his Eggnator on a direct box only (the same effect running through a POD - no amp, no bleed), and the singer is in a different room (kind-of). Granted, we're all hearing a nowhere-near-final mix, but it's only for groove ..er timing ..er feel.

In our case, the drummer is the only one in a separate room (with headphones), because he's the only one we're actually recording at the time...

The singer, guitarist and myself (bass) have a monitor in the next room over, so we can hear ourselves and the click without having to hook up headphones.

It's not the greatest way to do it, I'm sure, but it's the way we have that works with little to no bleeding.

yeah, I'd have to say the headphones do get a little tedious with all of us (except the singer) in the same room (Oh no, we've crossed our streams!!!). If I had the space, I'd probably do it the same way.

When I grow up, I want to get a Delta 1010 or a C-Port and some plywood and foam so I won't have to hassle with it :)

The band I'm working with are not full time musicans, they are students and are involved in alot at school. So they don't have alot of time to jam together, they often jam by themselfs and in pairs. Getting the whole band together takes a week of planning it seems. They are all pretty use to playing without each other so they are not reliant on seeing the other players for timing. All I need todo is give them a click and sometimes they need someone to count the measures so they know where they are in the song. We usually double time the click track so everything is perfect. The drummer has no problems fitting in. He was out saterday night so I played him everything we had done while he was playing. I had a single room mic that we usually just use for talkback to the control room. In the control room the drums fell right into the mix. The sound rocked considering it was a crappy mic on the far side of the live room. We wernt looking for the big rock sound, as I said before the bands music isn't based around the drums or even the bass, its all around the rhythm gtr.

Interesting... Cool. I wish I had 1 more room :) But we are in a garage(imagine that).. Kinda sucks for monitoring as well.. i guess you have to play with what you are dealt huh? Can I fold?!!?
