How to Record and Playback Simultaneously on My Computer?

I just got a new computer. It has a 700mhz processor, with 128 ram, 30 gig hard drive and a Sound Blaster Live Platinum sound card with the Live Drive port in the front. One of the things I want to do with my new machine is record some music. I have an old foxtec 4-track tape recorder which I have used to record my electric and accoustic guitars,keyboard,and mic. I've figured out how to record tracks from my old foxtec into some of the free software that came with the Sound Blaster. The SB came with Sound Forge XP 4.0 and Cakewalk Express Gold 8.0. What I want to do is be able to record and playback simultaneously on my computer. That is to say, I'd like to be recording on one track, while listening to another, then I'd like to be able to mix those tracks onto another, all on my computer. You know, like using the computer a super Fostec. How can I do this? What else do I need? Do I have to buy some expensive software like Cakewalk Pro 9? Nobody at CompUsa or Best Buy was able to tell me if I could record and playback simultaneusly with Cakewalk Home Studio 9(it seems like a pretty basic enough question about). I've browsed through these pages, but can't seem to get answers for my specific situation. It's getting a little frustrating, beecause I feel like I'm so close to being there, but that last piece is missing to make it all come together. If anyone can help me out, I'd sure appreciate it. Well... it comes down to does your sound card support full duplex recording?? In cakewalk 9 at least there is a check box in the options that lets you enable or disable it... sometimes will won't be applicable at all if you soundcard doesn't support it.... so look into that otherwise harass soundblaster through tech support..... you will have no probs with that processing power just U might have probs with that card
 
Thanks. So I guess that simplifies my question: Does anybody know if the sound blaster live platinum is full duplex?
 
99.9% of all soundcards made today are full duplex. The only time you need to worry is with the REALLY cheapo brands...or older cards (1997 & earlier).

The SB Live! is of course full duplex.

like slack said , most soundcards are full duplex.. youll also need multitracking software , and if cakewalk 9 or the likes is out of your pricerange , there is N-Track which is a GREAT program for the money (40 bucks) ..

Wow. Thanks for all the helpful input. Now I really feel like I'm getting somewhere. When you say "cakewalk 9" do you mean the pro or home studio?
